Odd
I’ve been on Twitter for well over a year or two now , and I don’t really use it all that much aside from reading what other people have to say and the occasional tweet of my own. On a regular basis I get an email message telling me someone new is following me. Mostly these are people that I don’t want following me. The red flag for me is that the number of people the person is following has increased massively since my email arrived (with that information included). I almost always will block those followers…although I’ve noticed lately the account has often been removed by the time I check out the new follower. Anyway, I gained a follower a few months ago and can’t work out why or how she connected with me. She follows a small number of people and has an even smaller number of followers. Most of those she follows are non-English speaking. Our one common link is that we both follow Neil Gaiman. Considering the huge numbers that follow Neil Gaiman, I can’t imagine how I came into the equation. It’s very odd .

Daily chatter
I had been planning to write something about Lego Lover but it’s late and I’ve got too many unformed thoughts to get it into writing at this time of day, or night as it’s the early hours of morning.
This morning, my mother-in-law came around 10:30 so I could borrow her station wagon to pick up the outdoor furniture I bought at Kmart yesterday. I thought it would be odd and difficult to drive it after our relatively new vehicle but it wasn’t bad at all. My only problem occurred when I got there and couldn’t work out how to remove the key from the ignition for a minute or two. That’s actually rather embarassing because this is the first car I ever drove after coming to Australia. We had been in Australia about six or seven months. I had been pregnant with Game Fanatic for the first several months and was too scared to try driving on the “wrong” side of the road. It was only when he was about three months old and the Scientist had started his first job that I was motivated to take the next step. And it wasn’t that big a deal by that point. I’d been riding as a passenger for long enough and everything was just the opposite of driving in North America.
I was home again within about forty five minutes and we unloaded the two boxes. One was a flat pack with the table and the other was a large cumbersome (but not heavy) box with the chairs and cushions. All parts were left in the back yard to be assembled. The chairs weren’t too hard but they came with little screws to connect the backs to the base of the chairs that were too big. The Scientist is going to have a try at getting them in when he has more time. The table was much easier than I anticipated and was complete in no time at all. There was a great, big sticker on the table top that took a while to remove. It all looks really nice and comfortable under the big bottlebrush tree in the back.
I sat there and looked at the big pile of shrubbery/tree cuttings that needed to be shredded and finally got that going. My two hours of work didn’t seem to make much of a dent in the pile. It’s still quite big but it’s not as high as it was. And the resulting mulch doesn’t seem to amount to much, possibly filling one small wheelbarrow at the most. I hopefully will be motivated to get more done on Friday afternoon before another major heatwave hits for the weekend.
I only got to sit and enjoy our new furniture for a short while before I had to leave to take G to his aqua aerobics class. It was very nice while it lasted, with Lego Lover and the Scientist both enjoying it with me.

Outdoor living
We built and moved into this house over fourteen years ago now. When we moved in, it was like a small house in a big sand pit. We did add some native plants early on and many of those are still around, including several bottlebrush bushes that aren’t really much bigger than when they were planted and several of another variety that have grown exceptionally well. Some grass was planted and various other plants have been added over the years with varying success.
I became the default family gardener, which is quite amazing since I am not a gardener. I’m getting better after many years though. I’ve been making attempts at growing vegetables almost every year for a while and this year I may have hit a small jackpot. Tonight I felt like we might be on to a good thing for the first time ever and even the Scientist joined in with adding fresh sugar cane mulch as the light disappeared tonight. Perhaps it was a matter of getting started earlier in the season or perhaps it’s the fact I’ve put a lot more effort into it. Today I harvested enough lettuce to make a small salad for dinner. It was extremely cool to eat food grown in our garden. I have several varieties of tomato growing well and showing promise of decent crops. Nothing like years past when we basically snacked on the food that grew because it wasn’t enough to do more. I think the real test will come when the bigger tomatoes grow. If we succeed there, I will be extremely happy. It’s not even just a matter of the success of growing my own food. I want tomatoes that actually taste good for a change. It will be worth the toil and the massive amounts of money invested in compost and mulch. It’s going so well right now that we are planning on adding more. I have a tray of basil seedlings to plant along with oregano and mint. I was going to plant the basil tonight but I started too late and it got dark so it will have to wait.
Anyway, I have gone off on a tangent. Over all these years, we’ve hardly spent any time outside, aside from the occasional splurge on plants where we do really well for about two weeks and then we lose interest. We spend too much time inside, to be honest. This year, I think we may have shifted priorities enough that we will make a decent attempt at creating an outdoor space to enjoy. Some of the changes planned or already done are:
- The Scientist moved our clothes hoist (rotating clothes line) from one corner to another. One of the trees/shrubs had pretty much grown into it over the winter which rendered it nearly useless. I had cut back the tree considerably and free up most of the contraption but it was still blocked by an overgrown branch. Now it’s in open space (over mostly sand) but it moves freely.
- I bought a garden arch to attempt to train the passionfruit vine over. This is essentially in the same location as an earlier one but since the vines never took off, it was removed. The passonfruit has already taken to the new structure and looks much happier in the open. We recently added a grape vine to climb the other side. I don’t know how successful that will be but there is a major grape/wine center just down the road so I think our climate and soil must be reasonably suitable.
- Today I bought a table and chairs so we can eat outside once in a while. We already have a couple cheap lawn chairs out there but until recently we hadn’t made much use of them. Since the clothes hoist was moved away, it feels right to sit in that area and we do. My mother-in-law is bringing her station wagon around tomorrow morning so I can get it home without paying expensive delivery fees.
- At the request of the Scientist, I bought a string of solar Christmas lights to hang outside. It’s a fairly small string that eventually found its way onto the mostly bare arch. It charges during the day and lights up at night. No electricity needed and it looks great. The Scientist also went out and got a set of ten solar garden lights. These used to be quite expensive but this year the price has really dropped. Lego Lover helped his dad put the lights out and they also look really great. We’ve been sitting outside enjoying the warmer weather and the lights the last several nights.
- We are finally going to get a fence with a gate installed between the house and the fence dividing our property from our neighbors. There has been a small picket fence going across from many years but it doesn’t go completely across and the gate has been broken for several years and has to be lifted to get it open. There is no privacy and no real barrier to intruders at the moment.
- We’re planning to have a patio running from the new fence to the back of the house (or a little bit beyond that). This is going to be a pretty major expense and will include a roof and some sort paving (probably bricks).
- These all pretty much center around one section of the yard. There’s a whole big area on the western side of the house that needs a lot of work. At the moment, cleaning it up and clearing it out will be our main priority. I’ve done some major pruning jobs on some of the shrubs and it already looks far more spacious than it has for years. There’s a giant pile of branches and foliage we need to either put through the shredder to make mulch or have it removed.
And the list goes on and on…but I feel like there is hope for us now that we are creating a nice space to enjoy outside. I’ll hopefully update as we progress through our plans this summer.

Fifteen already
Last week, Game Fanatic reached the milestone of completing his fifteenth year. In no time at all he will be an adult. Here in Australia he’s now old enough to watch movies and play games that are rated M or MA. Celebrations were pretty low-key with family visiting on the day before (Sunday). This was planned specifically to get the anxiety and stress he experiences out of the way ahead of time. I think it worked pretty well in the end. He really wanted to wait for his birthday to open presents but some really wanted to see him open presents. So he opened those from the family. That night he was lamenting that he’d not have much to open on his birthday since he was expecting one thing from us. I think he was pleasantly surprised the next day when he had not one, but four presents from us. Game Fanatic creates a birthday and Christmas wish list each year with considerable care and we mostly stick to his list when buying gifts as he’s not terribly fond if being surprised. I managed to find two games from his list secondhand at EB Games on the weekend at a lower price than expected. One was a very rare game that I just lucked out finding. I’d also bought him a copy of Watership Down, one of his favorite books, from Book Depository a while back when purchasing Asterix books for his brother. I decided to keep that as a small surprise gift and I think he was quite pleased to get it. There were a couple of occasions where we were in a book shop recently where he’d gone looking for it so it was a relief that it wasn’t in stock any of those times. The last gift was a copy of Life of Brian by Monty Python, another surprise. He spent most of his birthday playing the game he’d been given the day before while waiting for his dad to get home from work (early). The rest of the day was spent trying out the new games and spending time with the immediate family. He’d be unlikely to express the feeling, but I think he had a really nice day this year.

Regression
I had an unexpected visit from my closest friend and her fifteen year old son this morning. Game Fanatic was pleased to play his games with another competent player. Lego Lover must have woken up shortly after they arrived and he was in a foul mood. He’s known both since he was born but we’ve not met for quite some time. Lego Lover might have just stayed in his room and kept to himself. Instead, he decided to attach himself to me and regressed to some of the less appropriate behavior he had when he was younger. Typically, he locked himself away after the visitors had gone. With this friend, I don’t have to feel any embarrassment but it was a nuisance to have our visit sabotaged by this behavior.
This is mostly a regressive blip, though, when looking at the overall picture of Lego Lover. It’s been a great joy to watch him as he matures and takes such pleasure out of life for the past year.

Shop closed?
About a kilometre from our house is a small shopping center with a grocery store, a newsagent, a deli and a Chinese take-away place. There was a bakery that closed last year and has never been replaced. There used to be a hairdresser but it also closed. One shop has had a video shop, an Oriental food market, a fruit and veg market and probably another business that I can’t recall. The last was the fruit and veg shop closed abrubtly, leaving all the goods behind. It was a rather disconcerting mess that wasn’t cleared out for many weeks. Perhaps they couldn’t paytheir bills and they left? I don’t know. So we’ve had three vacant shops almost all year. Around Mother’s day a sign went up to say both a cafe and another fruit and veg shop was on the way. Not much progress was seen for months but last month a tiny fruit and veg shop opened inside. The Scientist and I had a quick look soon after it opened and found prices were rather high and there was a limited amount of stock. We did buy some strawberries but nothing else appealed. Anyway, I must admit I rather forgot it was there, being hidden in the least visible shop in the center, and when I did think of it again the following week, it was closed. And when I was back again later in the week, the shop was closed. It hasn’t reopened, to my knowledge, since its first week in business. There are no signs indicating the status of the business either. So I guess that’s another shop gone almost in the blink of an eye. There’s still no evidence of the planned cafe either.
Update: Today we noticed a sign has gone up saying the shop is temporarily closed and that a new business will be opening soon.

A tic
A throat clearing tic has found its way into our household over the past few weeks and it’s driving the family rather bonkers. The tic has attached itself to Lego Lover and doesn’t seem to want to let go. Lego Lover has had various tics in the past. In fact, he probably always has some sort of tic happening. But this one is quite disruptive. It has been bad enough some nights that I hear this quiet throat clearning right through the night while he sleeps. One night we were eating dinner and there was hardly a sound aside from the tic. I think the rest of us were clenching our teeth to stop from saying anything. Occasionally it’s just a bit more than one or more of us can take and words just fly out of our mouths. It matters not that it just feeds the tic. A grumble just has to be be made. Hopefully the tic will soon get bored of our family and move on to someone else for a while.

More about iPod Touch
I forgot to post a couple other things last time. That’s what I get for trying to write so late at night.
I also use Tweetdeck to catch up on my Twitter feeds. Although I don’t post much, I do find reading some of the tweets quite entertaining. Tweetdeck is organised nicely on the iPod Touch so that I can move quickly from one column to the next.
I added a nice converter program when I got this but when I installed Windows 7 , installed iTunes within that OS and tried to sync everything, I lost it. I only just remembered this today so will have to search for it again. Very useful for converting to and from metric and it also included a currency converter that updates regularly.
The calendar function (included with the device) seems far easier to use than on my old pda and it looks far nicer too.
There are a couple applications included that I don’t want and I haven’t worked out if and how I can remove them. One is the stock application which is useless for me since I don’t have any interest in that area. There’s also the YouTube application, which I most likely won’t be using although I can live with it. I’ll have to do some research to see what can be done.

New toy
I earn a small amount of money as a carer for a couple hours each week and recently saved enough money to buy myself a new toy. My old Dell Axim pda recently began to look quite dated and my search for a suitable replacement wasn’t particularly satisfactory because they really don’t make much in the way of an actual pda now. Almost everything involves a phone and that wasn’t really required since I have a prepaid one that gets used very infrequently. After looking at alternate options I eventually decided to get an iPod Touch. So now I have my new machine that keeps my calendar, address book and my ebooks.
I’ve already downloaded several applications, mostly for entertainment purposes:
- Stanza-This is a popular ebook reader for this machine. I’d been using eReader on my pda for a few years now and was satisfied with it. This one seems to have far more options than eReader. But the part I like best is being able to download books directly instead of having to transfer them from my computer. I’ve already downloaded several titles for my collection.
- eReader-I downloaded this to compare to Stanza but find I don’t use this one as much. I will likely give a better look one of these days because it’s far better than the version on my pda. This one also allows me to download books directly from certain websites.
- Traditional board games such as backgammon, reversi, mah jongg/shanghai, and mancala. There are several free versions available, many of which are cut down versions of paid applications. For my needs, most seem quite fine.
- Scramble-I play this on Facebook and this was free so I added it. This version plays well enough except that sometimes I have to tap the screen more than once to hit the right letter. I think I’m getting better at it with more experience though.
- My Shopping Lists Lite-A basic shopping list maker
- Period Plus-A program to track my periods. The paid version has far more features that probably would be little benefit to me since I don’t have any interest if getting pregnant again. But I like having some record of my cycles, especially as I move closer to menopause.
- I’ve found a few puzzle games to try. Several are versions of ones I’ve played in the past but they are still quite enjoyable.
It’s taken a bit of time but I’m getting more used to using my fingers as a control. I still find this a bit weird for some actions like typing in names. I made quite a few mistakes earlier on but those don’t seem quite as common as the first week I used it. I’ve also found the case isn’t quite what I expected on this. I had a nice closed in case for my pda but the case I bought only really covers the back. The screen is protected only by a screen protector. I’ve not seen any cases that are enclosed for protection while being carried though.
My one actual complaint is that I bought this a few weeks ago and found I had to pay for an OS update straight away if I wanted to be up to date. Apple really should have provided an update free to those recently purchasing the product. Otherwise I’ve been quite happy with it and find it more useful than my pda. I’ve been listening to music while using our exercise bike. I also can read or play games during the warm up or cool down periods if I like. I’ve also used the Google maps application to get directions before leaving the house recently. It will be interesting to see what other applications come along as time goes on. So far it’s been far more useful than my old pda.

The great purge
I opened the refrigerator this morning and found something leftover from a couple weeks ago. This isn’t that unusual but the container it was in was completely hidden behind various other items. It wasn’t much but the fact it had been missed at all bothered me. I decided to clear out a bit of the stuff and ended up getting rid of almost everything within. Several items had expired more than two years ago. I think the oldest was a container of yeast with a best before date of some time in 2005. It now looks clean and bright in the fridge. Of course we hardly have any food remaining but I am sure that won’t be the case for long.
