It’s been awhile …
Somehow, I stopped posting almost five months ago. It’s not that I haven’t had anything to say but procrastinated about it for too long.
When I last posted, we were waiting for our new car. We got it on March 29th, and it’s been going well so far. Our only complaint about it is the multimedia system. It has digital radio, which is great. But the display for the stations doesn’t have space to show the full title and it doesn’t scroll either. It’s just a poorly done system which is outdone by the one we installed in our old car. That’s not the whole of it but it is our main issue with it. Also, we can’t connect both our phones at the same time, which we could do with the old system. But we really have been doing well in the new car and it’s got all the bells and whistles that make driving easier. Well, there are a few sounds that we haven’t worked out yet but one day we will figure it all out. :)
We sold our old car to a family friend who somehow got into an accident not long after. I’ve seen it once since then and there’s a big dent on the back bumper. Not the fault of the family friend though. It is weird to have the old car still showing up once in a while.
Related to the new car, it’s supposed to support wireless Car play but my phone often doesn’t connect. This not specific to the system as I have issues with other Bluetooth devices not connecting much of the time. Currently if I turn off Bluetooth and turn it back on, it will usually connect but not always. Once it stopped connecting at all and I went to the Apple store where it was sort of fixed. The staff member ran some sort of diagnostic program, and it was supposed to be fixed. I never saw the staff member again and I ended up leaving. It all worked fine for a while but has shifted back into the same issues. I just know I will be back at the Apple store at some point to deal with this further. This phone is less than a year old and this shouldn’t be an issue.
In early May, I realised I wasn’t making much use of my gym membership, so I decided to suspend it for a few months. I seem to have hit a roadblock earlier in the year than usual. Mostly I have a lot of trouble during the winter, which makes sense since it’s cold and less appealing to do exercise much of the time. Anyway, this turned out to be a good solution because it gave me the break I needed to get back my motivation. In April I had done a trial membership with a Pilates studio with a voucher from a friend. I had two weeks of classes, and I did like it. Unfortunately, that studio is too far away to use regularly. But there is a studio in our suburb, and I did a trial with that one and liked it even better. After that I started a regular membership. That gives me two reformer classes a week and up to four non-reformer classes. I think I’ve been going for seven weeks now and it’s going really well. I felt really, really out of shape when I began there. I’m referring mostly to my core muscles which have been pretty neglected, made worse after having children. It’s hard work but I feel like I’m making tiny bits of progress and maybe one day I will be able to roll up to sitting from lying down. The other classes are mat Pilates, barre, yoga and strength and conditioning. This last class is not at all Pilates, but it’s been great for building up strength and getting fitter. I’m still on the weaker side of those in the class I attend but I can tell I am getting a bit better there too. I haven’t tried the barre or yoga classes. I am still doing tai chi regularly and sometimes I join the yoga class that is at the same location just after that. I do like the class but it is bit much to do both on the same night. It looks like our tai chi going to change nights in the future so I will need to use up the classes for the yoga before then. It’s just a bit far to go there two nights a week. I also have access to yoga through my Pilates and gym memberships.
My gym membership restarted early last month, and I have mostly been doing cardio work there. But Monday I tried out a class that is similar to the strength and conditioning class at the Pilates studio. It was really tough going and my arms were still sore today. I plan to do this class every Monday and hopefully get stronger. My gym membership finishes in April next year so it will complement the Pilates work I am doing until then. Overall, I have been more active this winter than I have ever been.
The Scientist and I went to Melbourne for a few days in May to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. We mostly had a good trip once we got there. Our original flight was cancelled at the last minute and rescheduled for the following afternoon. We missed one day of our holiday because of that, which is a common occurrence right now. Melbourne was lovely and we walked and walked all over the place. We didn’t see all we wanted to see, but we definitely got a feel for the local vibe. Not to mention experienced the trams that make city driving a bit crazy. After the worst walking day, my feet were done for and we had a tour scheduled, to see the 12 Apostles and the Great Ocean Road. That worked out really well since we didn’t have to drive or do anything but sit most of the time. The 12 Apostles was pretty awesome to see. I did try to lose my wallet and phone on a couple occasions along the way. One of the great things about travelling with the Scientist and doing all the walking is that we have a good time, through the easy and difficult times. Sure, my feet were in pain, but I got through it with the Scientist beside me. I’d like to go back one day but suspect we might try visits to other parts of the country before then. So far, we’ve seen Brisbane and Melbourne. I guess Sydney, Adelaide and maybe even Hobart (in the summer) would be good places to visit.
This is in no way a proper update, but it does cover some of the major points in the last few months. Maybe now that I am back, I will get here to post more frequently.

Impulse purchases
For a while, the Scientist and I had been interested in the frame tv that Samsung had released a year or two ago. But we already had three tvs in the house so we’d drool a bit and then move on. It’s currently runout time for 2022 tvs and we bit the bullet and bought a new tv with frame a couple of weeks ago. We’ve been enjoying it immensely since we got it but today someone came to mount it on the wall. It’s more impressive than we expected and makes our living room seem so much more spacious. The installation was a bit expensive but worth making sure the job was done properly instead of by us amateurs. I’m currently typing this on the sofa with the tv in art mode on the wall and it’s so nice. The bezel frame arrived on Tuesday and is called brick red, which isn’t so bright as we thought and suits our room quite well.
Meanwhile the tv that had been in our bedroom is needing a new home. It’s one of the earlier flat screens and a bit bulky compared to the current one. It doesn’t have HD so I’m thinking to donate it.

Good news
A couple of weeks ago I got a call from the car dealership to tell me our car was on a ship on its way to us. It made it all seem so much more real for us instead of a future dream. The date he gave us was around April 19th.
This morning I got another phone call from the dealership to tell me our car is getting here sooner and should probably be here by the end of the month. So exciting! We’re due to go in next week to have our current car valued for trade-in. I don’t suppose it was be a lot due to age and also the paint on the hood is looking bad after the elements have affected it all these years.

Falling
Just before Christmas, I got a new tube for my bike after it sat on the patio for most of last year. It was mostly a matter of procrastination that kept me from taking care of it. First I was travelling and then it was winter when I came home and the weather wasn’t great for riding. By December, I’d started to get an itch to ride again and so we took the tire into the shop and had the tube changed. I noticed a few days later there was no cap on the tube and rode to the shop to get one for it. I’d only taken shorter rides so far and this was my longest ride since I started back again. It all went well enough and I got to the shop and got a new cap. I also booked the bike in for a service. It did go the better part of a year without use so I suspect there’s stuff to adjust and oil and whatever else needs doing. I had actually left home with the idea I would drop it off without considering I need to book ahead of time. Anyway, it’s going in tomorrow to be serviced and I will either walk home or take a bus or perhaps a bit of both.
I stopped into the shopping centre afterwards to look for something and then stopped into one of my favorite tea shops to get a drink. I had taken a cool bag with two different reusable cups, depending on the shop I visited. One is plastic and has the logo for the shop where I ended up. The other one is generic and is made of glass. After I got my drink I started on my way home and put the drink in the basket with the bag. All was going well on the way home as I made my way towards the pathway next to the highway. I stopped at the corner of a busy road and a quiet side street to wait for traffic to clear so I could cross the road to the sidewalk on the opposite side. I’m not sure what happened while I waited but suddenly the balance of the bike started to tip over and I felt things happen in slow motion as I landed on the ground, fortunately, more on the side street. A vehicle stopped and a lady got out to check on me. She helped me up and I was okay for the most part. Just a bit shaken. My first thought as I was landing was that I was going to lose most, it not all, of my drink. Surprisingly it was fine and nothing much spilled. It wasn’t until later I thought of the glass cup inside my bag. That was also fine. As for myself, I had a bit of a graze on both my hands and my left knee but felt okay. After thanking the lady for her assistance, I walked across the side road into a little park to have a bit of a break and drink my tea. Then I got back on and went home. I was pleased to be able to increase the load on the gears so I could travel faster and got home more quickly than with the low gear settings. The only issue was the friction on my hands was uncomfortable for much of the ride. Once home I had a shower and cleaned up the slight wounds and was able to relax.
Things got a bit sore over the next couple of days. Not painfully sore but enough to be uncomfortable. I did go to pilates on Friday morning and later to the gym. My shoulders were quite sore that night. Not sure if it was due to exercise or injury or maybe a bit of both. There’s still some soreness in my left shoulder where I landed but it’s not terrible. Also, my knee is a bit bruised but not terribly so. I’ve just been taking it a bit easier before I have to take my bike in tomorrow. I’m hoping it’s not as windy as expected tomorrow as I hate riding in strong winds. Still, it will be warm so shouldn’t be too bad Also I’m hoping nothing got knocked out of whack when the bike fell. It all happened so slowly that I doubt anything was likely to be damaged. After all, I basically fell while at a standstill.

Happy New Year
Here we are a week into the new year and I thought an update was in order. December was a busy month as always.
On the first, the Scientist turned sixty and I took him to Penguin Island to see the little penguins, also called fairy penguins. We had a tour booked and it takes a bit over an hour to reach the launch point so drove down early on his birthday. The actual island does have lots of little penguins that come to shore at night but we saw none in the wild during the day. We did see the penguins that have had injuries or are old and live in captivity instead. They were pretty beautiful. I still find myself amazed to find penguins living in our climate since I always thought of them as being only from the cold environment of the Antarctic.
We stayed in a hotel nearby for two nights as a little getaway and had a lovely time. The second day we spent in Mandurah trying to find the giants that were created by the Danish artist, Thomas Dambo. There are six of them and one is located in Perth. We found three of them and tried really hard to reach a fourth one but took a wrong turn and missed out. This was the last one we tried and we were too tired to go back even once we realised our mistake. Our plan is to go back sometime during the year and finish up. The fifth one is meant to be discovered using clues from the other five. The giant in Perth we will see before our next visit to Mandurah. Sadly, some nasty piece of work, or perhaps nasty pieces of work burned one of the giants last month. We had already seen this one but it just makes me mad that someone would do such a thing. They plan to rebuild that one but I don’t know when that might happen.
I’ve never been on top of things when it comes to Christmas baking and usually, we’re doing some sort of cookies on Christmas Eve along with a bunch of other things. This year I started earlier and I baked quite a few treats. The first thing I did was Christmas M&M cookie bars and those came out quite well but were seriously too sweet. Still, they were well-liked by the boys and I ended up doing a second batch on Christmas Eve (which turned out a bit dry and wasn’t as good). I also tried making German lebkuchen which is a first for me. We’ve done gingerbread many times but this is a treat I remember enjoying on my visit to Nurnberg, Germany where they originated. I remember loving them and taking a bunch with me on the train ride away from there. I didn’t have any other food and I got thoroughly sick of them before I finished them. Still, I have a good memory of them. The ones I made came out okay but not as nice as the original ones. There’s dried fruit in them and I wish I had blitzed it in the food processor to make a smoother batter. I just didn’t like the texture of the pieces of fruit in them. I didn’t even realise that was a part of them until I found recipes. The glaze was okay but didn’t dry hard as I wanted. I found some store-bought ones after Christmas that had chocolate on the base and I had forgotten that. But I might try them again next year.
I also tried making shortbread and that mostly worked aside from the fact one tray got slightly scorched. They were really easy to make so I plan to try them again. I also tried making Danish butter cookies as Lego Lover likes to get the ones from the store. The batter was quite easy to make but we didn’t have a piping bag that fit the nozzle and so we were using an itty bitty one for making cookies. It was hard to do much with the tiny nozzle and the cookies were a bit thinner than they should have been. I’m not sure if I will try them again, mostly because Lego Lover didn’t seem to be interested in them. That said the taste seemed about right. I’m not a big fan of either of these as they are so rich but was glad the mixing of them turned out to be so easy.
I also found a recipe for Polish gingerbread cookies which I had not heard of before. Apparently, they are quite a big thing in the city where they originate in Poland. I made dough for these many days before Christmas, which the recipe says to leave out for at least a night or two before rolling out. I assume this is with the expectation that the weather is cool or cold so I didn’t do this but put it in the refrigerator instead. We had too many things by Christmas Eve so I didn’t bake them on Christmas, saving them for later. Instead, I made them after New Year’s Day and they came out pretty well. The best thing about them was the Scientist didn’t find them too sweet and was able to help me eat them. They are supposed to be glazed but I opted to have them plain. They were a bit dry but otherwise quite nice and not too strong with ginger like some tend to be. I cooked all these cookies in our air fryer/little oven and it was quite easy to do with the short cooking time coinciding with the time it took to roll out more cookies.
Lego Lover had his 24th birthday during this time and it mostly went okay. The main hiccup happened when one of our dogs leapt onto a couple of raisins that accidentally fell on the floor and we had to take him to the vet in the midst of the celebrations. Not that we were doing a lot that day but it was more about time than anything. The dog was fine and Lego Lover did enjoy his presents, cake and food. My MIL had made some pancake rolls filled with a meat mixture that he likes and he also had one of his favorite curries, beef rendang, for dinner. I also made waffles earlier in the day, which he thoroughly enjoyed. This is the first time for making them on his birthday. Overall he was pretty happy with things although he had some mental health issues pop up that night, as often happens on the day.
Christmas Eve went better than usual this year and I finished all the cooking I had quite early (for me). I found a better way to make my usual veggie patties and it made things easier. I also cooked them in the air fryer which made a huge difference in time and heat in the kitchen. They cooked better and took far less time plus the lack of massive heat was a major plus. We watched Carols by Candlelight on tv, which is a yearly tradition and then we drove around looking at Christmas lights once it got dark around 8:30pm. This year we found quite a few more houses decorated than in recent years and didn’t have to travel far to find them. In fact, several lovely displays were right here in Ballajura. Once home, we watched the carols again and went to bed once they finished.
Christmas Day started early as we went to the usual Christmas breakfast held by family friends. There were quite a few people this year compared to last year. The breakfast is a traditional Sri Lankan Burgher one with breudhar (a sort of fruit bread baked in a tin shaped like a bundt cake), edam cheese and bananas plus love cake and, meringues and Sri Lankan Christmas cake. I don’t suppose this tradition will continue for too many more years as the hosts are getting older and won’t be able to carry on for too many more years. Also, the numbers are rapidly decreasing in this crowd. People don’t hang around too long at the breakfast and soon we are back home with the boys (who haven’t attended in many years).
Since most of the preparations have been done ahead of time, most of the work today is tidying up and preparing the patio for people to be here. The Scientist cooked roast beef and a turkey on our Weber kettle and Weber Q grills, which kept the kitchen a lot cooler. We were able to relax more than usual on the day. The dinner itself was nice with the food we provided and salads by others rounding out the day. Also, we had two desserts but they were both smaller which made it easier to finish. Plus a yule log that was brought unexpectedly and which was eaten only by me (slowly over many days). After dinner, we did family games inside. The Scientist and I had bought the Songpop Party game on Nintendo Switch earlier and had that set up to play. There were a few glitches with the phones added for play at times but it mostly worked and we had some fun trying to pick out songs. Then we had a board game called Decrpto that turned out to be great and even engaged one of the family who doesn’t usually actively play. We had another game purchased to play but there wasn’t time. I assume we will try that out with some of our game-playing friends. We got them at the most local game shop which is next door to the bike shop where I was getting a new tube for my bike tire that had gone flat last year. The boys aren’t big on the crowds on Christmas so were relieved when we had the house to ourselves after everyone left. That’s always a tricky part of the day for me. I like getting together with everyone but knowing how hard it is for the boys doesn’t make it easy. The family that attend is down to a minimum so hopefully, we can reach a good balance in the future.
I will also mention that Christmas is also the Scientist’s younger brother’s birthday so we did have a little celebration for that in the midst of the Christmas stuff. We almost forgot to do the cake and everyone was full but got that in just as everyone was leaving.
The Boxing Day to the eve of the NYE period was pretty low-key. There was a cricket match to watch on tv and we all had our own things to do. New Year’s Eve followed our usual routine of doing our own thing most of the evening and then getting together for the last couple of hours with chips and dip and special fizzy apple and grape drinks to celebrate. We heard lots of fireworks going off earlier in the evening but didn’t see anything. It was enough to bother the dogs just a bit. Midnight came and went and then we were off to bed and it was a near year.
Well, I think I’ve written quite a tome here but wanted to cover a lot of material in this post.

Craziness of life
A few days ago, I went a bit bonkers and decided to do a good clean on our sensor kitchen garbage bin lid. I was extremely cavalier and allowed several parts to get wet. I don’t know what came over me while this happened. Needless to say, the lid stopped working. Even once it seemed dry, water must have gotten caught in the sensor area because it wasn’t operating at all. Several days passed and I ordered a new bin, which is currently on its way to us. Fast forward to this morning when I went to open the bin to put something in it. The lid was working again and now it works just fine. Still, we have another bin on its way to us. It’s a shame we have an order en route but I am really glad the sensor is back in order.
Also today, the Scientist received a letter from our bank and it’s a rather curious one. The letter said that our online banking payment had gone to an old account number for our credit card and that we should use the newer one. Keep in mind, our number hasn’t changed in five years. Sure enough, it was a different number that has been used in our online banking transfers. But this is the first we’ve heard of it in all these years. It’s been a problem for some time that our payments seem to take ages to be processed and this might be the reason why. I had already made a credit card payment earlier today so I did another one with the corrected information. I’m going to keep an eye on it to see whether this makes a difference on processing.
I think there was another thing that happened that was kind of crazy but now I have forgotten it. :( I guess I will add it later if it comes to me again.

Correction
I was wrong when I said I hadn’t heard of willy wagtails swooping last week. I seem to have forgotten the Scientist sharing his tales of being swooped in the past. I apologise for this mistake. Apparently, my memory is getting faultier with time.

Swooping
From some time in August to November, it’s considered magpie season here in Australia. It’s the season when magpies are protecting young and swoop potential invaders. I’ve been swooped a few times over the years. Both boys have been swooped when young. Game Fanatic got pecked slightly under the nose, I think when he was a toddler. Lego Lover got attacked near the eye, which was pretty scary. He didn’t suffer any serious injury but has since had a fear of the birds. Once I had a magpie swoop me while riding my bike. Not once, not twice, but three times as I peddled faster and faster. I think that was one of the rogues around that swooped throughout the year. I’ve had a certain wariness of them myself since that time decades ago.
In recent years I have not been swooped at all though, even though I see them all the time. On the other hand, I was swooped yesterday at the end of our street but it was by a willie wagtail. And that one swooped me three times while I was trying to walk one of the dogs. Not that it caused any injury but it was offputting and distracting. I have heard many people say these birds are nastier than magpies although I usually hear about the nastiness to other birds. This isn’t the first time I was swooped by one either. It happened around the same tree about a week or two ago, although it wasn’t quite so persistent.
The willie wagtail is a much smaller bird but apparently, it’s part of the same family of ravens and crows as the magpie. But I’ve never heard of them swooping before.

Signing
Back in June, the Scientist and I went to our local Toyota dealer to see about ordering a RAV4. We knew there was a wait and were rather dismayed to learn it’s a two-year wait. However, we were told that there was a Corolla Cross coming out later in the year and it could be this would suit our needs as well. We have been driving a Corolla for the past fourteen years but were looking at something that would suit accommodate our two grown sons better. We put down a deposit to go on a list to buy and waited and waited. Then we saw an ad on tv about three nights ago for a Corolla Cross and we quickly checked the website. Sure enough, it’s now available for order. It was a couple of days ago we got the phone call from the dealer and we went to test drive yesterday.
We were really impressed with the new model and we immediately said yes to buying. We now have a Corolla Cross on order but have no idea when it will be available. But we are near the top of the list so will be getting one of the first models released. Our current car is old enough that we have none of the typical modern conveniences so we are really looking forward to this new vehicle. I had been hoping to get it this year but I think it’s more likely to be early next year now.
I’ve posted a photo from the website below that shows what it looks like.

Gardening progress
Yesterday I got out into the yard and got more done with tall grass and weeds. Actually mostly the grass. In the front yard, there had been a patch that didn’t get mowed last time because the battery ran out. The last time we did garden work it wasn’t a priority and just continued to grow. So I started in the front and finished it for the most part. At one point I ran into the remains of a grass tree that I had forgotten was there. It never grew once we planted it and now it just falls apart. This was one of several plants given to us by a friend who is good with gardening. It’s probably about the fourth one that has failed to survive. Surprisingly, there’s a frangipani in a pot with not a whole lot of soil that is doing quite well. I do intend to add more soil one of these days though. And a gloxinia given to the Scientist when he had surgery last year had come back to life. It was doing well for ages and then it seemed to suddenly die. The pot was still in the kitchen next to our sink. Then I noticed it was growing again. It seems it’s one that dies back regularly and then comes back. I really thought it was dead though. Hurray for us being slow to get rid of dead plants? :D
After I finished our front yard, I mowed around the back patio before it gets too long again. Then I tackled lots of grass in our side yard. That’s the most neglected part of the yard and there’s still a lot of weedy, long grass to get rid of. The Scientist did do a bit of weed whacking earlier but tried to limit his time outside in hopes of avoiding the awful allergic reaction of his last experience. So I mowed a lot and then I used the weed whacker a bit and then I stopped because we needed to go to the shops before they closed. When I came in I had a bunch of bottlebrush flowers on the back of my head where I had a ponytail. The end result is there’s a much clearer space out there. Once the bottlebrush trees finish flowering I plan to prune back the trees and bushes extensively and get rid of a half-broken limb from one of the trees. Surprisingly it continued to flower and grow despite being connected by a limited bit of tree.
