Stuff
I am still keeping up with exercise to some degree. That isn’t translating to any weight loss as yet and it also isn’t translating to increased muscle mass. I am a bit stuck on that part because I know I have built up muscle but to stay the same that would mean I’d have to lose muscle somewhere else and I don’t think that’s happening. That said, I am not sure how much stock to take in the scales that do all these fancy computations on the body. I am finding it’s been a struggle to get through exercise sessions lately. Usually, I will start feeling better after going for a while and the rest comes more easily. Not the case recently though.
I don’t think I mentioned here yet that my dad went home just before Thanksgiving and is doing okay. It seems he is suffering a bit of confusion since the second stroke but other issues don’t seem to have changed a lot. I did speak with him a few days ago and had a slightly longer conversation. Still quite brief but he was able to get more out on that occasion.
Game Fanatic has been trying to get hold of a Playstation 5 for some time and the pickings have been limited since its release whenever it was. Then EB Games said they had some available for pre-order last month and I rushed there to get an order in to find out they had sold out. I was put on a waitlist in case more units arrived than predicted. These units were supposed to come fairly soon after the orders were taken but I didn’t hear anything further. So I stopped in one day last week to check on the status. It turns out they were still working on calling people about orders and I was able to collect mine after all. So Game Fanatic now has the monster-sized machine which blocks our tv and was able to add a couple of items to his limited Christmas list.
The Scientist hasn’t had any real holiday from work in ages. I don’t count the time taken off when he had surgery earlier this year. As of tomorrow, he’s off until early January. Here’s hoping the time off allows him to recharge a bit for next year. Also, the Scientist had a birthday last week and he’s now started his last year of his 50s. I took him out for lunch at a Thai/fusion restaurant where they had robots to deliver meals to tables and it was a good meal. Then we went to Holey Moley to do mini mini-golf and a game of bowling, both of which were lots of fun for us.
We still don’t have any definite dates on our borders opening here in WA but it feels like it’s getting close to reality now. I have been playing around with dates for travel for next year and it seems like it might be okay in the second quarter barring any delays from newer variants.

Happy New Year
My intentions of writing more frequently haven’t quite caught up yet. I see it’s been nearly two months now, not to mention the Scientist made comment on it recently too. That’s probably a really poorly worded sentence but it will have to do.
It’s a new year and I am hopeful there will be more positive to come out of this year than last. The Scientist started a new job last week so life at the Lorikeet house has been considerably changed from the everyone is at home model. The job means a considerable increase in income for him but there are some concerns that keep it from being anywhere near an ideal job. Hopefully many of those can be overcome so that he has a more satisfactory experience there.
Meanwhile my increased hours as a carer have gone back to the two hours a week from before. The other carer returned from his holiday and is back to usual. I didn’t mind the extra work load but it wasn’t exactly ideal to spend nearly half an hour to get there for a mere 2.5Â hours most of the time.
My driver’s licence was due to be renewed by tomorrow so I decided it was time to get a haircut. This is the first one in well over a year and my hair was down almost to my mid-back. I went yesterday to a less commonly frequented shopping centre that has two hairdressers. The first one I came to had someone free so I had my hair cut by about 3-4 inches. It’s still long enough to go past my shoulders but quite short in comparison to pre-cut. I had the full works done with shampoo, blow dry and style and it looked pretty good when I finished. I rushed off to the post office to get my licence renewal done. (Here, you just go to the post office with the renewal form and they handle the payment and photo for you…no updated eye tests like back home though.) It was just before closing and I lucked out by getting someone free there too and it was done and over with in a matter of a few minutes. It will be a couple of weeks to get the actual licence but I have the renewal with me in case I need it.
There are a few things I wanted to write about so I might just put them here to remind me…
- Lego Lover becoming turning 18
- Christmas
- Sadness for people we know
- Health/fitness

Insomnia
I seem to be having more problems with insomnia in recent months than I ever recall having before. Yesterday, the Scientist was having day surgery to trim up a torn meniscus and I was to get up earlier than usual with him to accompany him to the hospital. That was all fine and I even made sure to shift my wake up times to accommodate that change. Unfortunately, on Tuesday night I just couldn’t get to sleep properly and then I kept moving in and out of sleep stages, so I suspect it was a case of not going into deep sleep at any point. Strangely enough I did keep drifting into some sort of sort of sleep where I would have the most bizarre dreams that seemed to come to an abrupt stop. I guess this was REM sleep even though it wasn’t satisfying. Something to check out later on, I guess.
After I dropped off the Scientist, I dropped into the office of my gynecologist that was in the medical centre at the same hospital to see if my test results were in yet. The doctor hadn’t seen them yet but I was told the biopsy came back benign and I could come back at 1pm if I wanted to discuss it with him. If it was all good I really didn’t need to discuss it unless he had anything to tell me about it. I just wanted to know if it was clear for peace of mind. I didn’t really think there would be a problem since my symptoms seemed to fit quite well with hormonal shifts I’d had before.
I went home but my attempts to nap were not successful at all. I did sleep quite briefly once and had another weird dream that ended quite soon after it started. Even though I tried to just stay still for a while in hopes of sleep taking over, I gave up after a while, only to discover I must have only been asleep for a minute or two as it wasn’t much later than when I’d last checked the time. I gave up sleep by mid-afternoon and started drinking lots of tea in hopes it would revitalise me. I also took a shower that seemed to be really helpful and just kept busy the rest of the time.
I didn’t get the call to pick up the Scientist until nearly 8pm and by this time I think the caffeine may have kicked in. Fortunately the roads were pretty clear by this time so it was easy enough to get there and back. The Scientist came out of surgery just fine and he’d been waiting for ages to be processed to go home by the meager evening staff that had replaced the day staff.
When we got home, he ate a bit and then went to bed. I stayed up, playing the game of Civilization I’d started hours earlier while waiting for the call. Soon it was quite late again and I was still feeling rather wired but went to bed. Sleep last night wasn’t a lot better and included strange dreams that I’d wake up from. I should point out that there weren’t bad dreams but seemed rather elaborate and interesting. In fact, I find it hard to imagine how so much information could fit into such short periods of sleep. I did eventually get into some deeper sleep but woke up rather early today.
I’m not too sure about the cause of the insomnia on this occasion but I wonder if the fact I missed a couple days of my anxiety medication is related. I had some bad effects once before when missing this medication but I don’t remember exactly what my sleep was like at that point. I called my doctor’s office to see about getting a new script and was given a bit of a hard time by the receptionist who seemed to think I needed to see the doctor to get it redone. It’s a shame I didn’t realize it was down to the end when I saw my gp last month or I’d have asked for that to be replaced when I was getting a new script for my thyroid medication. I suspect it was only the fact I had been in so recently that persuaded this woman to put it through although she didn’t guarantee it. She said they’d call me if there was a problem. I haven’t heard so hopefully it should be ready tomorrow. Anyway, this is one of the same medications in the same dose that Game Fanatic takes, so I took one of his tablets and will replace it once I am sorted out. I don’t know if the medicine is making a difference but it does feel like I will be able to sleep tonight. Will have to see what happens when I actually get to bed.

Parenting, food, concert, parenting
Yesterday was a pretty spectacular day. Neil Finn concert, after all!
The early part of the day was fairly ordinary. Got up and had breakfast…rather late but still it was breakfast, particularly as it was my usual bowl of rolled oats with cocoa, brown sugar and milk added. Finished some solitaire daily challenge puzzles on the Microsoft app. Exercise was not quite a usual. Started out using our Wii Fit for half an hour and moved on to an app on my iPad. It was tough but it went well enough. It’s nice having more options than when I was going to the gym regularly.
It was well into afternoon and we still hadn’t seen signs of Lego Lover stirring. I realise this is part of the teenage years but I do feel he takes this rather to extremes. Showered and dressed to go out. Wore a skirt but had no decent shoes to wear with it so stuck with cross trainers. Was reminded by the Scientist it might be good to remedy this situation. Too late on this occasion. Nearly time to go and finally we see signs of the Lego Lover being awake. Time to leave.
Arrive in Perth and park. Realise parking on streets is still free on Sundays. No $11 fee for parking in the parking lot next to the Perth Concert Hall. :) I purposely skipped lunch with expectations of a meal in the city. We walked up Barrack Street and considered a Korean place we’d eaten at before seeing Leonard Cohen a couple years ago. Decided to look further afield. Down through Murray Street and onto William Street where we found ourselves at Jamie’s Kitchen. We haven’t been back since our anniversary last May. I thought it might be rather busy but it the queue wasn’t that long. Lucky us, getting the last free table! It was tempting to go for the same meal as last time but chose a ravioli dish in the entree portion. Meanwhile. bread selection with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Cheap starter that doesn’t fail to satisfy. I could eat a meal of it alone and I’m not really that much the bread lover. My entree arrived and the Scientist’s seafood plank was landed onto the tomato cans placed on the table. Entree was rather small this time and wasn’t quite enough but was totally delicious. I savoured each bite, especially considering there weren’t so many. That’s okay, leaves room for dessert. :D The pannacotta special which I adored  last time was now on the menu but I opted to try the epic brownie this time while the Scientist went for the trifle. Desserts arrived and totally met expectations and more. A most satisfying second visit to Jamie’s Kitchen and looking forward to trying more the next time. I might add the Scientist had attempted to book a table beforehand but they weren’t accepted at that time of day. Left to it, I found my way there anyway. :D If it had been too busy, though, I would have been happy trying sushi next door or another local eatery.
It was now late enough to pick up our tickets but too early for much else. We walked back to the concert hall and collected our tickets and learned our cameras were not welcome this time. Not too unexpected since this was an indoor show but rather disappointing when we had front row and center seats. Ah well, less time looking at the camera and more watching the stage. We walked across the esplanade to the Swan River for a little while then returned my camera to the car. I’d had ideas of staying outside but the weather had cooled considerably and the warmer lobby of the concert hall became our temporary hangout. It was interesting to see the cafe there with food served in one end of the lobby and tables in a side room for dining. They also had smaller treats like Maltesers at a premium cost. More interesting were the small tubs of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream in the fridge. After the super sweetness of my brownie, that wasn’t going to happen. But still interesting to see. The merchandise table was being set up. Not a lot on offer for Neil Finn but a few items that looked decent for support act, Joshua James. Eventually sales began and I chose a tea towel to add to my collection. It’s not as nice as previous ones but it will do. Overprices water bottles purchased and I was surprised at the flimsiness of the plastic. It felt as though it would crumple in my hands despite being full but I suppose it’s a good thing to use less plastic.
Finally the doors open and we show our tickets. Front row seats, here we come! For quite a while we were alone in the front row but most seats except two to the left of the Scientist were filled shortly after the support act began. Joshua James was pretty good…played some good music but a bit limited on the chatter. Interval time. The four people to my right who arrived shortly after the show started were gone already, for drinks, I presume. A few minutes to go and seats were filled except those two at the Scientist’s left. Finally the pair arrived. I recognised the woman from other shows.
The show itself was like a dream. Sitting right there in front of stage I felt I could reach out and touch but obviously resisted the urge. Neil played seven songs from his new album. They sounded really good live. The one song I was hoping to hear was White Lies and Alibis and my wish came true. Perth was the first show to hear Animal vs. Human and it was good. The live factor almost always is a bonus with Neil’s songs. But there was more. Songs from the Split Enz days  like One Step Ahead and Message to My Girl.  Songs from the Crowded House days like Don’t Dream it’s Over on just piano with backing vocals. What a fine performance that was. He went from strength to strength and no weakness on this night or maybe this tour by accounts I’ve heard. Only Talking Sense from the Finn album with his brother Tim was sensational. Solo Finn songs like Sinner and She Will Have Her Way. Two encores and a splendid finish with solo Neil on Love this Life and then  Better Be Home Soon, which meant it was truly over.
Obviously we must be too considerate and polite because the three setlists taped to the stages were quickly extracted by other fans before we had thought of it. Usually we get these at request but we were just that close we could reach for them. Sigh. That’s okay because I have my treasured setlist from his show with Paul Kelly last year, thanks to the Scientist. Crowds left the auditorium taking us with them. We lingered behind a bit and the idea of hanging outside the stage door occurred but we didn’t go there. Maybe a shame as there aren’t many opportunities to hang out there now.
Time to go home.
Arrived home just before midnight. Lego Lover is up. Game Fanatic is up. It’s late so the Scientist is soon off to bed as today is no holiday. Game Fanatic goes to bed and it’s just younger son and me left. It’s a frustrating parenting moment because Lego Lover has now restarted his continuous talk on his favorite subject of the moment. It’s a topic revisited constantly in our house and there’s not much to add. I’m not terribly interested right now as I am still wanting to enjoy the moment. Because he doesn’t understand body language well at all, I tell him bluntly I don’t want to hear about it now. I am still feeling rather annoyed that he barely was up by the time we’d left earlier in the day. At the moment I just want to keep the night alive with the lovely buzz I was feeling. Instead, he paused briefly and carried on. This is how it is with my child with high functioning autism. He doesn’t get what I want and his need is foremost. I abandon my buzz for a bit and hear him out. Eventually he does go away and I feel guilty because this happens often enough with him. My attempts to curb him don’t really work so it is what it is. I love him anyway and decide that even though it’s not my thing he’s talking about, it is his thing and he feels such love and joy of it that I can’t help but be endeared to him. As it is, some of his older habits have fallen along the wayside and I miss them sometimes. I hate to think of the time I will miss these moments, difficult as they sometimes be.

End of the line
Over a decade ago, the Scientist was diagnosed with sleep apnea and was fitted out with a mask and a CPAP machine. While he’s had to replace masks a few times, the machine itself has lasted this entire time. Until now, that is…over the past week or so, it has taken a bit of work to get it going and last night all attempts at operating it failed. I think most CPAPs only last about five years on average so he got good value from the machine. The Scientist didn’t get a good sleep last night and I must admit it was a bit less than optimal for me. I’ve been rather accustomed to the white noise for the machine and it was so very quiet last night. It was also unusual not to have that draft of air from the mask. I guess it’s a bit like when city people go from the noise of the city to the quiet of some isolated place. Â I’m hopeful the Scientist will be able to get another machine today but the sticky part is Game Fanatic has an appointment this afternoon. We will see what happens…

50
For nearly an hour it’s been the 1st of December and that means the Scientist has reached his half-century. He’s feeling kind of old now. His hair is probably more gray than not these days and his mental faculties aren’t as sharp as they once were. Which is to say they are pretty sharp compared to most people but have slowed down a bit in recent years. The body parts are more prone to aches and pains too. But like me, he’s been working out six days a week and unlike me he has been quite particular with his diet. In three months, he has lost 11kgs. He’s looking far better these days and I look forward to seeing the further effects of his efforts. Even though we don’t work out exactly together the whole time, it’s become quite a nice habit to go to the gym every day and spend an hour or so. We have joked that it’s almost like a second home…With further thought, I might add that it’s like a second home with too many visitors at times. :D
Happy birthday to my partner in life!

Another year older
The Scientist passed another birthday today, and it has gone well, I think. Lego Lover and I hatched a plan to get him a Lego Mindstorm set many months ago. I’ve been putting aside money all year and the Scientist’s parents contributed significantly towards the total. I paid for it in cash so there’s no financial pressure to pay it off now. The Scientist and Lego Lover should have some great times ahead of them as they work out how to use it.
The Scientist also got a copy of Ironman from Game Fanatic. This was something of a surprise, too, because Game Fanatic has made a habit of giving only games as gifts the last year or two. The Scientist is quite pleased because he’s been wanting this film on dvd since it came out.
I baked a ginger cake at the Scientist’s request and it came out really nicely. I’ve been having too many mishaps when baking lately so it was nice to have success on this one. Lego Lover thought it tasted great, too, which made it doubly pleasing for me.
The day itself seemed to go quite well and I think the Scientist thoroughly enjoyed himself. Hopefully he’s now having a good night’s rest.

Insomnia
It seems to be running through the family at the moment. Even the Scientist was struck with it this morning so that he got up before 4:30 and was quite tired by the time he went to bed tonight. Game Fanatic has been suffering this for the last couple of weeks and part of the problem is that he has become something of a night owl in the last couple of years. There are other issues involved but the combination is making it quite difficult. Lego Lover still goes to sleep quite late much of the time but not always and I have been something of a late nighter myself…Perhaps the recent change to daylight savings time hasn’t helped either. I’m really hoping it’s voted out in the referendum after the three year trial ends next year.
Obviously, it’s another late night so I might just try to sleep once I’ve posted this. Just needed to finally do an update.

Holiday, part 2
To continue the story of our holiday…Wednesday was a fairly wet and chilly day but we made the best of it. Our journey took us into Denmark, about fifteen minutes away from our cottage. Our first stop there was the visitor centre, which seems quite big for such a small town. It also houses a collection of barometers, including the largest in the world. One of the volunteers provided a map with some local attractions. We chose to visit just a few attractions due to the rain and the limited walking we could do with Game Fanatic’s sore foot.
We spent most of our time in the town centre and visited a few shops. I went into a craft shop that also sold ice cream, a rather bizaar combination. They had a lot of really nice yarns there but I opted not to buy anything since I’ve still got projects to complete. Lego Lover was hungry, of course, so the Scientist and Game Fanatic took him down to the the award-winning bakery for a sausage roll. It was much bigger than what he usually gets and he really liked it. With his lunch taken care of, the rest of us ate lunch at the Fig Tree Cafe. I had a veggie patty on a roll with chips (thick french fries). The rolls was huge, with a thin patty, lots of salad and sauce. It was very messy, but it was good. After we had lunch, Lego Lover was taken to the craft shop to buy an ice cream and they even had his favorite, cookies and cream. It should also be noted that all of us got something to eat at the bakery during our brief time there. The Scientist bought a vanilla slice when he got the sausage roll. I bought a hedgehog slice for dessert (best I’ve tasted and I’m not that keen on them). Then just as we were leaving, we got Game Fanatic a curry pie, which he said was very nice.

Holiday, part one (long)
So we left on Monday for the six hour drive down to Cape Howe Cottages where we were staying at the Snug. It was cold and rainy as we left the city, with forecasts for the same over the week. The drive down was mostly uneventful, aside from a bit of a mechanical scare with the car where it was refusing to change certain gears just as we were leaving the city. It was okay after awhile and all was fine the rest of the journey. We stopped for lunch in Kojonup, a small town about two hours aways from our destination. Lego Lover refused to eat there or even to stay inside so waited in the car while we ate. He ate some of the snacks in the car instead and I guess was just fine with that.
We arrived at the cottage around 3pm, I think. It was late afternoon and the owner happened to come out to the gate just as we arrived, which was very timely. The rains had stopped at this point so we were able to take all our belongings inside in our own time. The kids were over the moon to be there and Lego Lover quickly unpacked his little bag and put everything in its place. He and Game Fanatic settled in quite quickly to just hanging out.
