    Assorted

The premier of our state just did his daily update and there were nine cases of covid. It seems all were related to previous clusters. So far the numbers haven’t exploded but it still seems likely to happen at some point. While I haven’t been avoiding going out, I haven’t been spending as much time in more crowded locations. The press conference also outlined the plan to deal with high case numbers when we reach that point. That is still a long way off but obviously could change at any time. I also noticed that rapid antigen tests are now available locally and must be in demand because my pharmacy has a sign saying they don’t have any. The Scientist ordered some tests a couple of weeks ago but they haven’t arrived yet.

I’ve been attending a pilates class at a local leisure center for the past few weeks and I feel like it’s really helping with core muscles. Meanwhile, in the gym, I’ve been avoiding those exercises and doing more cardio and more weight machines. Still, my muscle mass hasn’t changed from several months ago even though I can feel changes in arms and glutes, etc.

One of the support workers who share support for my client has been promoted to a coordinator position. This opens up several more hours per week with him and I’ve taken on Tuesday hours. I chose this day in order to provide an opportunity to attend a special exercise class on a regular basis. The changes in support workers are going to be disruptive for a while but I hope he is able to settle in for the longer term. This does create another day where he may be unsupported while I’m away though. The extra hours will nice after losing so many hours from my other client. I don’t want to take on too many with this client, though, because he’s a family friend and I want to keep a decent balance between work and personal life.

We had several days with milder weather but that has now ended and we’re back to another heatwave. We haven’t had any rain so far this year but that is pretty typical for this time of year.

I got out onto my bike almost two weeks ago and it went quite well. The last time I went out I had quite a struggle to go very far. This time I didn’t struggle at all and managed what might have been a normal ride back in the time I was riding regularly. This was a nice surprise. I will admit to being tempted to go farther than planned because I was feeling well enough. Common sense did prevail and I stuck to a normal distance in the end.

I got a message from my doctor’s office that I needed to come in to discuss some results. I was only there on Monday so I assume some of the tests took longer to be processed. There were two tests from earlier that had been repeated so I suspect this might have been one or both of them. I got an appointment with yet another gp that I’ve never seen since she has the earlier available time on Tuesday.

Yesterday I stopped at a local park to eat a sandwich I’d gotten from the nearby bakery. While there, a black swan approached the side of the pond/small lake where I was sitting and seemed quite interesting in making contact. I took several photos, even approaching the swan and taking an overhead shot. I’ve been to this park before but never had any of the creatures approach me. It was pretty neat.

I started playing the Wordle game that has taken the internet by storm lately and I’m enjoying my daily dose. What I like about it is it’s just a single game that takes a couple to a few minutes and won’t be a major time sucker. It works much like the old Mastermind game but it’s for five-letter words. You get six tries and I’ve been able to solve each puzzle so far. I do it really curious how so many people need to share their results each day. And it’s weird how so many people get so annoyed by that. I personally don’t do it but I have no concerns about others. I just find it strange they need to share so much.

    All in a year

Last year I was offered a position to support a man who’d had a stroke a few months before. I started the job at the beginning of 2021 and now that job has come to an end. I was off work the past couple of weeks so it’s come to a rather abrupt end and that is kind of sad but it’s not something that was unexpected. And so I am back to working part-time one day a week with the occasional relief work that I was doing before. I am not keen to take on any other long-term work at the moment due to my upcoming travel but I will consider another role for when I return in May.

    Happy New Year

My intentions of writing more frequently haven’t quite caught up yet. I see it’s been nearly two months now, not to mention the Scientist made comment on it recently too. That’s probably a really poorly worded sentence but it will have to do.

It’s a new year and I am hopeful there will be more positive to come out of this year than last. The Scientist started a new job last week so life at the Lorikeet house has been considerably changed from the everyone is at home model. The job means a considerable increase in income for him but there are some concerns that keep it from being anywhere near an ideal job. Hopefully many of those can be overcome so that he has a more satisfactory experience there.

Meanwhile my increased hours as a carer have gone back to the two hours a week from before. The other carer returned from his holiday and is back to usual. I didn’t mind the extra work load but it wasn’t exactly ideal to spend nearly half an hour to get there for a mere 2.5 hours most of the time.

My driver’s licence was due to be renewed by tomorrow so I decided it was time to get a haircut. This is the first one in well over a year and my hair was down almost to my mid-back. I went yesterday to a less commonly frequented shopping centre that has two hairdressers. The first one I came to had someone free so I had my hair cut by about 3-4 inches. It’s still long enough to go past my shoulders but quite short in comparison to pre-cut. I had the full works done with shampoo, blow dry and style and it looked pretty good when I finished. I rushed off to the post office to get my licence renewal done. (Here, you just go to the post office with the renewal form and they handle the payment and photo for you…no updated eye tests like back home though.) It was just before closing and I lucked out by getting someone free there too and it was done and over with in a matter of a few minutes. It will be a couple of weeks to get the actual licence but I have the renewal with me in case I need it.

There are a few things I wanted to write about so I might just put them here to remind me…

    Paid to walk

Last week I did five four-hour shifts where I walked through buildings on a local university campus to count people in rooms. Every half hour, I would stop at each room on my route and check the number of people in the room. Many of the rooms were almost always empty and many were used quite regularly. I found the numbers started dropping as the week wore on though. By Friday most of the rooms were empty or nearly so. It was slow going at the beginning of the week though. The person I followed up from was late getting back and so I started late. Then I got to the buildings and found I didn’t have the map I needed. Fortunately the supervisor rushed to return it to me. It took about three rounds before I was caught up and I found I was going pretty much straight through the shift. On Tuesday I no longer required a map, except to provide codes for some of the doors, and by Friday I was getting through the route in just under 20 minutes at times.

The work was fairly mindless after I got used to it but it was physically taxing. I had bought some new cross trainers a couple of weeks ago and I must say they worked quite well for me. Even when my feet were sore in the morning, they shoes seemed to support me well enough they didn’t hurt when I got started. But by the last three rounds, my feet were always tired and I found my pace slowed down quite a bit. Still I managed to go back the following days and do it all again. But I must admit to being happy to be done with that right now. The cumulative effect of the entire week left me feeling pretty run down by the weekend and only today am I feeling renewed energy. I was going to exercise yesterday but decided it might be good to take a break, especially considering how much exercise I’d had through the week. I used an app on my old phone and it tracked about 11 kms over the four hours, which would have been about the same through the week. I will return to my exercise routine today, though, as I am feeling much better than I have in days. I was expecting to do another week of this at a different campus the week after next but it seems I won’t be after all due to some mix up either on my part or someone else. I’d have liked to have had the extra money but my feet are feeling relieved to have the break. :)

At long last, a new post!

Some days I feel I could write something every day but then the next day comes and I find it hard to write anything. I guess I’ve had quite a few days like that over the past month.

Life has gotten a bit busy recently. Last week I started a temporary/casual part-time job at a local university. It’s the same job I’ve done the past two years so it’s not really anything new, aside from some of the people involved. I’m working eighteen hours a week over three weekdays, which leave two days for other activities during the week. This work will only last a few weeks at most.

My other, less formal job has also had some changes. I was working casually for the disability services commission as a carer for a family friend for two to three hours a week. I’ve been doing it for about eight or nine years so it’s old hat to me. But the carer hours are now being handled by another organisation and my work will be more formalised. This means I have to have a police clearance and I have to fill out an employment application as if I were totally new to the job. Once it’s sorted out, I will be getting a small increase in pay with an official decrease in hours to just two per week. Also, the funds will be deposited directly to my bank account, which means there’s no chance of my charge taking the money and spending it elsewhere before I get there (as has happened a few times in the past).

I finished up two of the Coursera classes I started last month. The Science of Gastronomy was both easy and enjoyable. The worst part was getting through the lectures on video, which sometimes ran a bit longer than was really needed. One of the last assignments involved making sauces using varying amounts of salt and corn starch plus water and a flavoring. Curry powder was recommended but we didn’t have enough powder on hand. I used cumin powder instead, which was a mistake as it was not very nice on its own. There were six different solutions and our task was to work out which one had the most intense flavor in it and it was interesting to note the effects of the amounts of corn starch and salt on each mixture.

The Maps and Geospatial Revolution class was far more interesting than I ever expected it to be. The instructor was engaging and did fairly short lectures plus weekly mapping assignments. We had a final assignment that we had to submit for peer review  which involved making a map that tells some sort of story using online tools. I decided to make a story map of the photos I took when I went into Perth one day last month while my car was being serviced. I liked doing most of the assignment but had some technical difficulties with saving content as it would disappear from the page afterwards. I never worked that one out but found a work-around by changing the blurbs on my Flickr photos so that text would import and I didn’t have to do anything further in the web application. I wasn’t able to fix the titles of the photos used, though, so had to leave them with the numbering the application gave. It looked kind of strange but it was the best I could do within the limited time available. There was also a final exam I completed last night and managed to get 45+ out of 50 points on it…which was pretty good except I missed one that I should have gotten right.

I’m still enrolled in a Modern and Postmodern class which mainly is focused on philosphers in the modern and post modern eras. I really like the subject but got rather far behind while finishing up the other two classes and didn’t do the first essay assignment. I decided I would just audit this time and try to do the class again when it’s offered. At the moment, I’m toying with the idea of dropping it for now as I have other classes starting up soon and not enough time for all of it.

I am still going to the gym most days but it’s probably more like five days a week than the six I was doing when I started out. Even at the beginning I had no illusions that I’d be able to stick to a six day schedule and had the goal of going at least three or four days a week . I did manage to stick to that schedule for most of the first ten months but have slipped a bit over the last six weeks or so. My current favorite exercise routines are the fusion video classes that combine yoga and pilates. Mostly it’s been yoga and a very tiny bit of pilates if any. At least in the classes I’ve tried. There is a class that is all pilates but I haven’t tried it yet. I haven’t done much yoga in about ten years when I last took a class. I had taken a class of the Kripalu yoga style while in Halifax, NS while we lived there for a year and when I came home there wasn’t a class nearby that interested me. The classes at the gym are rather fitness oriented so tend to focus a lot on the exercise for exercise sake. But I’ve found I’m really enjoying the yoga parts so try to do at least part of a yoga class after my other exercise each day. All of the classes seem to do quite a bit of the plank poses which would have been really challenging for me in the past but are now getting easier for me.

All the yoga workouts have interested me in doing a proper yoga class again. And it just happens that there is a yoga class that runs before our tai chi class on Tuesdays.  I’ve signed up for a short beginner series as a refresher then may try out the regular classes that finish just before our tai chi class. Hopefully this will leave me quite relaxed on Tuesday nights. :D

Meanwhile I am now donating plasma on a two-weekly basis, mostly on a Tuesday…making for rather busy Tuesdays on alternating weeks lately.

    Working

I am working again for the next few weeks. It’s the same project for the Catholic Education Office that I did last year where I help to process test booklets for statistical purposes for the year 5 and 9 students.  At first I wasn’t going to do it but decided I would but restrict it to two afternoons a week this year. I’ve only worked twice so far but I think the atmosphere is far more relaxed this year. I’ve also found it’s far more organised that before and each of the tasks has a sheet explaining the basics of what the person should be doing. Last year I spent much of time cutting spines off the booklets but I’ve yet to do that as the need for another task has been greater. I’m not keen to stand and cut for hours but I won’t mind trying it out again. They’ve managed to raise the height of the cutter so I’m hopeful it will be more ergonomically appropriate for my back.

    At work

I finally started my temporary, part-time job on Friday and it was quite an experience after being out of the paid workforce for so many years.I I’ll be working three six-hour shifts a week for the next six to eight week, going from 12-6pm.

The first day started well enough, although I couldn’t work out where to buy the parking permit I needed and ended up in the visitor hourly parking. Apparently it was quite amazing I found the building as most of the other staff had trouble working out where it was. This group was located in one of the main buildings last year but has been relegated to a small trailer sort of building due to the amount of noise from the machines being used.

The job mostly consists of checking booklets to make sure details are correct and that students haven’t marked in inappropriate areas on any pages. Then the spines of the booklets are cut off and the pages are scanned into the computer system. These three tasks appear to be what I will be doing for the next several weeks. I spent three of my four starting hours doing the cutting using some fancy machine. It works fairly well but there’s a lot of fixing up the stacks of booklets and then simultaneously pushing buttons to do the cut. Even after the first hour my thumbs were getting sore. The last hour I was able to move into another room and do the starting work on another batch of booklets. By this time, there were only two of us there as almost everyone had started early in the morning and departed not long after I arrived. This might have been an advantage because it was quite warm on Friday and the trailer was rather warm despite the ceiling fans. I hope there is an air conditioning system when it really gets warm next month.

Anyway, I was able to stop at one of my favorite grocery stores after I left and find all sorts of delights. This made the half hour drive home a bit more bearable. My next work day is Tuesday and I plan to wear more comfortable clothes in case I end up standing for long periods again.
