It’s the weekend-odd and ends from the past week or so
A couple weeks ago the Scientist and I both installed Windows 8 on our computers. Last weekend, I had a problem where my computer wouldn’t move out of sleep mode and something must have gone wrong because no amount of recovery would work. Eventually it was decided to do a clean installation and also to replace the hard drive as it was kind of old and started to get crowded. The installation went fine and I’m still trying to install some of my missing software. I ran into some troubles when I tried to load my outlook mail files and have yet to find the most recent files. I do, however, have files going back five years or more. Most of my email in recent years has gone through my gmail accounts so I should be able to retrieve most things but it doesn’t feel right for it to be missing.
I finally replaced my stolen camera last weekend too. After buying the required items from the computer shop, the Scientist and I ended up dropping in to Camera House in the mall. It’s not the one we usually visit as it’s a bit further away from the local store, but it seems to be one of the better stocked stores in the chain. It happens that the model I wanted, an Olympus Pen PL-5, Â had just come in a couple days before and hadn’t even made it out of the box yet. I looked at it and also the “mini” version plus the Canon G15, which is very much like the camera that was stolen. I even had a quick look at a another Canon but that one was really not what I was looking for. I eventually bought what I’d expected to buy and brought it home. When you’ve used cameras from the same company for a few years, it’s a bit weird to be faced with totally different operating systems and controls. I found it overwhelming at the start because it really is quite different than any of the others I’ve used. But I’m getting more used to it and learning the controls little by little. Hopefully I’ll be up to speed with it before the next birthdays and holidays.
Monday morning, I logged onto the computer early to buy tickets for the Neil Finn-Paul Kelly concert happening next March. I really enjoyed the one-off show they did last year so I imagine the next one will also be pretty special. It was kind of funny because I happened to comment a couple weeks ago that it looked like we wouldn’t be seeing and Finn-related shows this year. While that is true, this tour was announced just a few days later and now we have the anticipation of the next show. I’m hoping to take my new camera with me and try it out on the low lighting of the venue.
A couple days ago I was taking our family friend, an intellectually disabled man, to the library and gym as a carer. While at the library I decided to check out a couple of books. I haven’t used this card for a while so it was necessary to update details. It was a bit of a shock when the librarian read out my alternate contact as my friend who died earlier this year. This really surprised me because I do recall using her as a contact for a couple of libraries. But it was weird feeling to have her name pop up like that. Today would have been her fiftieth birthday so I’ve been particularly feeling her absence today. Her name also popped up on Facebook as she had an account that she hardly used. I keep thinking I should remove her name from my friends list but it doesn’t feel right to do that for some reason.
My shoulder is starting to feel better now. I’m still taking pain tablets daily but I was able to drop down to just one a day this week. It’s been hard having to avoid exercises using these muscles but I’ve mostly managed it so far. All going well I should be able to start moving back to my usual exercise next week. I’ll have to be cautious, though, because I seem to suffer more pain hours after exercise than I do while doing it. Meanwhile, my legs have been getting a pretty good workout on the cardio machines lately. To end on a really positive note, the woman who owns the gym has said she wants to do before and after photos of the Scientist and me in January as we’ve both made some good progress since we started. The Scientist has already lost 10kgs since the end of August. My weight hasn’t dropped a lot but my other measurements have gone down pretty steadily and it’s obvious by the way my clothes fit.

Moving the body
I had been exercising kind of regularly when we got the puppies but that kind of stopped once they were in the house. Their pen/crates/other stuff rather took over the games room space where the Xbox and tv are and shifting things around was a rather major undertaking. But I stopped using that excuse a couple of weeks ago and spent half an hour clearing the space, rolling up the cheap piece of linoleum and vacuuming the carpet. This endeavor was made easier by the fact that we extended the space they inhabit as they both could easily jump the pen.
So once I got a bit of a workout making space for a workout, I decided to use the Dance Central program for the first day and that went pretty well. I found I was a bit rusty on some of the movements but improved with a bit of practice. The second day I went back to the Your Shape Evolution program and ended up quite sore for a couple days afterwards. The same thing happened when I first used this program and it put me off returning to it for quite a while. I do find once I have used it once or twice that I am much better unless I overdo my workout.
I have discovered there are quite a few different workouts available on this program although I don’t think it caters to the overweight and extremely unfit users all that well. I am sure many would be totally put off continuing the program after a single workout. Before I got too far into it, I set up the program to connect with my Ubisoft Uplay account so that I can track information from my computer. What’s offered is still rather basic but I’m hoping this will be extended over time. I discovered a new version of this program is being released which includes warm up and cool down routines. I’ve noticed that none of the programs I’ve used so far have included this part of a workout so it’s about time this was included. How irresponsible to do a workout program and leave out some of the most important parts.
I’ve been using the program 3-4 times a week for a couple of weeks now and have started to notice some changes. The workouts I’ve been doing have focused a lot on abdominal and lower body with lots of squat exercises. I usually find the squat exercises really aggravate my knee problems but have gotten through this without any major dramas so far. I’ve already noticed that some of my muscles are getting stronger, which always feels like an accomplishment.
One really good result of the little bit of exercise has been a reduction in my fasting blood glucose levels over the past week. This has been the usual result with exercise most of the time I’ve been checking but I found they weren’t coming down very well earlier this year, whether I was getting regular exercise or not.
Aside from this exercise, the Scientist, his mum and I have been taking a tai chi class at the beach for the past term. The Scientist learned some tai chi when we were in Canada a decade ago but hadn’t returned to practice until now. It’s been an interesting experience to be learning this so far as it’s not something that can be rushed. We learned one move each week for the first eight weeks and the past two weeks have been consolidation of what we learned. But I am still rather unsure of myself and seriously considering repeating the first level of classes next term if I’m still struggling once we start back in a few weeks. I’m hoping practice will get me over a lot of the difficulties I’m having as starting right at the beginning is likely to be quite frustrating.

Go Red for Women update
I should be going off to bed but I’m going to write something since it’s been so long. I last posted about the Go Red for Women heart health challenge so I will follow up from that for now. It’s now the eleventh of the month and I’ve been exercising nearly every day so far. I missed one day and on another I only just managed to fulfill the thirty minutes of the challenge by walking when we were out earlier in the week. I wasn’t feeling well that day so I feel that I was doing well to get that far.
So far, most of the exercise has been indoors, using programs on the Kinect, which was a birthday present. I should backtrack a bit and say that when I first got the Kinect, it didn’t work particularly well on our tv in the living room as it’s such a small space. What eventuated was we got a new tv and moved the old one into our games room and the Xbox is now connected there, which allows the living room to be more lived in, so to speak. The games room isn’t that big but it’s far more spacious and the Kinect works quite well in the space.
One of the programs I bought was Your Shape: Fitness Evolved. A while back we bought a version of this for the Wii and it was a disaster to use. There was the space problem but it was really not geared towards the less fit or beginners. This program, however, does a far better job. It does have some problems with providing the right excercise, but it’s a vast improvement over the previous one. For one thing, it’s mostly doable at the lower end of the scale. I will say, however, that it’s a good idea to try out little bits of it at a time. When I first used it, I tried out several short routines and ended up sore and uncomfortable for so many days that it was about a month before I willed myself to try it again. I’m glad I did return to it because I think I’ve got a better handle on what I can manage each day.
Another program I bought is Dance Central, which is a pretty odd choice for anyone who knows me that well. I don’t tend to like dancing and I’m fairly klutzy. But I read that this program is good about showing you how to do the moves by breaking it down into smaller bits and providing opportunities to practice and get it right. There was a demo on the Kinect Adventures disk that came with the Kinect and it seemed like it might be useful as an exercise tool. So far, I am making some progress. The first song is a Lady Gaga song, which drives me a bit batty…but I’m kind of used to it now, at least while I’m using the program. It’s taken a while but I’ve managed to get through all three levels of the song and I’m pretty competent on the hard level. It’s a rather startling feat since I honestly didn’t think I’d ever conquer some of the moves. Anyway, once I got to the medium level I added a second song that I didn’t know at all and dislike far more than the Gaga song. I’ve kind of got used to that one too…can’t say I’d ever be happy to hear it on the radio. A few days ago I added the third song and I seem to be progressing a bit more quickly.
I knew dancing to be a very good exercise but I am finding this out first-hand as I practice the different dances. Even when I am using the break it down mode, my heart gets pumping and I work up a sweat. I find that mode is good for warming up and also serves to remind me of the moves I need to use for the full song. I have been in a habit of doing this program for a little while, then moving on to the Your Shape program. Today I think I might have gone just a bit overboard by trying out an interval training program which lasted twenty minutes. I’d already worked out for quite a while and was pretty sore by the end of it.
A third Kinect program I bought was the Sports program, which I am not using for exercise at the moment. It’s fun for playing with the family but I find some of the activities are a bit harsh on my feet so don’t want to depend on it for regular exercise.
The challenge goes for ten weeks so I am hoping I will be able to stick to some regular exercise in that time. And hopefully I will manage to avoid injury that creates stumbling blocks in my efforts to be fit again.

Different sort of challenge
I signed up a couple days ago to be part of the Go Red for Women heart challenge sponsored by the Australian Heart Association. I don’t seem to be able to maintain the better eating and exercise habits so I’m hoping this will help keep me motivated for a bit longer. It starts on the first of next month but I’m not necessarily waiting to start working a bit harder on my goals. I’m mostly looking just to improve my fitness and my eating habits since experience has shown the body shape and size will adjust quite easily with those changes in place. It’s possibly a bit risky with the seasonal change towards wet weather ahead but I’m planning on using walking as my main form of exercise. And just maybe I will get my bike into a shop and get it serviced so I can feel safe while riding again.

What a difference a couple days makes
I saw this news article about the relationship between exercise and period pain last month and said to myself that I’ve known this for years. Still I often do try to do some exercise during all but the worst pain. This period, the symptoms didn’t all kick in until well into the second day. My weight didn’t increase until then either, which surprised me because it almost always jumps a day or two before then. Maybe the regular exercise is helping a bit. The cramps weren’t all that bad on the second day but I found exercise a most miserable experience. My body just didn’t want to move and the particular exercises showing up in the program generated routines were quite difficult. Yesterday I opted out of exercise, just to give myself a bit of a break and I think that was just what I needed. Today I got back into my exercise routine and kind of enjoyed it this time. My weight had dropped back again and my body felt pretty good. Compared to the two days before, it was such a breeze that I might have continued on for a couple of hours had common sense not prevailed. The only issue I had today was a very tight calf muscle from a couple days. Originally both calves were tight but only the right one was a problem today. I managed to work through all but the split jumps (jumping jacks using just the legs) without a problem. The jumping was very hard but I got through all 24 of them and was okay the rest of the time.
I was also feeling pretty good today to that my blood sugar level has finally come down to normal range again. They had been slowly climbing over the past few months and had been running a bit high since November. Both my body and mind were feeling quite sluggish all the time so it was quite a struggle to pull out of that state. It’s taken about six weeks to get back into the normal range so I must make the effort to keep it up so I don’t return to that horrible state.

Wellness
I’ve been doing pretty well about checking in almost daily on the Wii Fit program so as to at least track my progress. I only missed two days in December. My exercise has settled into a sort of regular rhythm which I’ve been trying to find for the better part of a year or more. I’ve been alternating between my three Wii Fitness programs most of the time. The cardio boxing program is progressing better than I expected. I find it’s getting more difficult but is still quite manageable. The New U program continues to build upon previous routines too. My focus on abdominal muscles seems to be working. A few of the exercises have been quite difficult but I can already see an improvement over my first efforts. This is the first time I’ve ever tried to work on this area ven though it’s been rather poochy ever since my pregnacy with Game Fanatic. I’m mostly using the Wii Fit Plus program to do aerobic exercise such as jogging and a couple yoga exercises.
I spent several days recently with varying digestive disturbances. Much of the time it’s simply felt irritated, painful and/or uncomfortable but today that seemed to have improved so that it’s just a very noisy stomach. That’s assuming I don’t have a second relapse. I ended up missing four days of exercise during this period although I did get in a bit of work in garden one evening. The last exercise I’d done had been pretty full on and I was really sore in a couple areas so the first part of the break was beneficial to allow a bit of healing there. My return to exercise went far better than I expected.
I did come across a slight problem due to a bug in the New U program a couple days ago. The routine set up for me had nine exercises and I went through the first several with no problem. One of the exercises was to do twelve pressups and I did those extremely well. I got my best rating this time and was quite pleased with myself. Then I moved on to the next exercise, which turned out to be the same thing. I tried but there was no way I could manage another twelve so I skipped it. I was again presented with the same. In fact, the number of exercises at some point had changed to nineteen and all of them were the pressups. So I skipped right on through to the end and had a terrible rating due to missing out on all those hundreds of pressups. :) I made up for the missed exercises in the Wii Fit program. I’ve not had any further issues with the program, which is quite a relief since I like it so well.
Yesterday I also had great difficulty doing push ups in the cardio program. It required me to place both palms on the Wii Fit board and push up from there. Due to my general weakness and my excess weight, it was impossible to do even one. I eventually found out I could do it from a kneeling position and thus managed about four. My shoulders are still sore from that one so I probably will give it a miss should it come up in the next few days.

Wii and fitness
Last year we bought the Wii Fit board and program as soon as it was released. We used that program pretty regularly for a few months but interest waned and it went unused for several months. It’s a good program but there are some features that can be rather annoying. Of course, there’s also the boredom factor.
I think it was earlier this year that Electronic Arts released EA Active, which slightly uses the Wii fit board along with the Wii controllers. I liked this program in many ways but it didn’t work for me. And I really mean it didn’t work because when using it for certain exercises, it would say I was doing it wrong. So I would attempt to correct myself but it just wouldn’t recognise me any longer and I’d have to restart everything. I tried to put up with it but it became more frustration than anything. There were also exercises in some of the routines that were just a bit too rough on my knees which left just the custom routines. I would have worked it out if I could have overcome the more technical problem.
More recently, an update to the Wii Fit program was released, aptly called Wii Fit Plus. Essentially this is the Wii Fit program with some added features and activities. I tried these out once or twice before it sat for a few weeks. But then I got back into it and have at the least been doing the body check nearly every day. I manage to do the body training part once or twice a week most of the time. I’ve had a good run so far this month and seem to be getting better at some of the exercises. Even my balance improved although it’s been really poor the past two days. The new activities really add a bit of life to the program and provide motivation to keep exercising. The only problem with this set up is the Wii Fit board itself because it’s literally breaking on one side. We hopefully will get at least couple more months out of it before it needs to be replaced.
I’ve noticed a lot of fitness programs showing up at the shops lately so I thought it would be good to have some sort of alternative program to prevent boredom. One that had pretty good reviews was the Gold’s gym cardio workout. It’s essentially a boxing program. I found a used copy at EA games at a good price so I decided to try it out. So far it’s looking good. The big positive on this program so far is that it assume you don’t know how to do any of the moves and has tutorials for all before you do the workout. I haven’t gotten through all the tutorials but the Scientist finished today and did the full workout and really likes it. It seems like something I will also like once I get used to the moves. So far the only criticism of this program is the lack of a metric units option. Both the Scientist and I had to convert our measurements to imperial units to set up our profiles.
So today the Scientist and I went out and got a new program called Your Shape. We haven’t found too many reviews as yet because it’s so new. The program has a camera which is intended to scan your body and work out a routine based on your body shape. I think it’s also supposed to allow you to watch yourself to help correct what you’re doing. When it loaded, the first thing we noted was the very American accent of the trainer. Aside from the Wii Fit, all the accents have been American…they are progressively getting more annoying with each title we try. But this particular one makes no sense at all. There seem to be two versions of this program in distribution from what I can work out. In the US, the program features Jenny McCarthy and the boxes I’ve seen online clearly state that. Here, an animated trainer is featured but with an American accent. I don’t quite see why they have released a separate version but used another American instead of using a British accent (which is fairly usual). That aside, we can’t stand Jenny McCarthy and would never have bought this had she been in it. Too bad for us…
The next thing we discovered is that you’re supposed to have eight to ten feet between you and the camera. Our living room is quite small and there’s no way we’d manage that in any configuration of our furniture. It’s just not big enough. This information is not stated on the box anywhere, not even in small print. Had we known this, we’d never have bought it. We tried to make it work anyway. For the Scientist, the camera didn’t read him all that well due to his brown skin. He’s not all that dark but he seemed to blend into the background far more than I did. I can only imagine how a really dark-skinned person would manage with it.
The program jumps right into the exercises and seems to assume you know what to do. There are tutorials that can be watched but I found they were too fast and complicated for my clumsy body and mind. I did get a bit better with some practice but I always felt I was floundering around instead of doing the exercise correctly. Meanwhile that annoying voice was making increasingly condescending remarks…It wasn’t even so much what was being said as the way it was being said. It was like some adults talk to children…I remember the boys were both highly annoyed by the dentist talking to them as though they were preschoolers. Well, this was quite similar. I found the camera was reading me as doing some of the exercises correctly when I definitely wasn’t. And a couple of very simple exercises that I am pretty sure I was doing correctly were wrong…The whole thing just left me mentally exhausted for trying to figure out what to do next. This program is really suited for people who are already fit and know how to do these sort of exercises.
Needless to say I am not happy with the program. The Scientist is going to attempt to return it in the morning. If that doesn’t work I will just try to sell it online.

Planting
On Saturday, I spent much of the day mowing the front lawn, then clearing out much of mess on the other side of our driveway. After the winter’s rains, lots of winter grass had grown quite tall and was looking very untidy. I cleared out almost everything and cut the branches on our pin-cushion hakea tree. One might say this tree is a weed because it grew from the seed of one we planted when we first started our garden. The original was beautiful but died quite abruptly one year, leaving heaps of seeds behind.
The current tree has grown rather awkwardly and looked a bit like a gawky teenager, I guess. I have cut it back significantly around the bottom and trimmed off some of the longer, drooping branches that seem to drag it down. It looks much healthier now. Despite it’s gawky appearance, it bloomed quite nicely over the winter, far more than this or the original ever did.

Hard work in the garden
Thirteen or so years ago when we moved into this house, we did a lot of planting of shrubs and whatnot…one of the plants was an orange honeysuckle plant. The flowers looked really nice. The thing is, I know that it’s not an ideal plant. I remember very well how my parents spent weeks clearing the honeysuckle from along the creek bed that ran behind our house. It was literally choking trees. I’m not quite sure how closely related this variety is, but the flowers are quite similar, aside from the color. We planted two of these shrubs and one of them has turned into a monster while the other one has had rather modest growth over the years.

Stuff
I didn’t end up doing quite the things I intended to do today. But I did managed to accomplish a little anyway. I made up for two days of no exercise by doing two hours of exercise on the Wii Fit. I worked myself harder than usual and tried the more difficult levels of some of the exercises, especially within the aerobics category. I found I did far better than expected on a couple activities so feel a bit more confident to continue at the harder levels.
Game Fanatic saw the doctor and all is fine. We may need to see a physiotherapist at some point to strengthen his ankles. Previously she called it a strain but today she was saying it was a sprain. Not sure which it is but I suppose they both take some time to heal.
I received a jury summons a while back for later this month. Because I have full time care of children fourteen years of age or younger, I am eligible to be excused. I finally had that witnessed this week and mailed it off today. If I could be sure it would only be for one or two days, I would go ahead with it because they will keep sending one every two years until I serve. This was my second summons and I’d guess I will get two or three more before I am in a position to take it on.
We spent most of the evening watching the opening ceremony for the Olympics tonight. We’re in the same time zone as Beijing which is rather convenient for us. I couldn’t help wondering at the further pollution caused by all the fireworks but they were quite a sight. The ceremony was good overall but I don’t think it was as good as the one in Sydney in 2000. Strange to think how long ago that is now. Lego Lover likes to watch the parade of nations with all the different flags but he got bored after a while. When I found a list of the countries’ order online, he went off to play and we called out to him when a country of interest was coming up. Game Fanatic did stick around the entire program although he was reading the Scientist’s Far Side comic books at the same time.
