Captain Marvel
I don’t normally go to see all the superhero movies at the cinema. The Scientist and one or both boys have gone and I waited to watch on dvd. But last year when I didn’t go see Black Panther at the cinema, things got a bit tricky. The Avengers movie came out a month later and the guys all went to see that too. They were desperate for me to see it after that because they wanted to discuss and they ended up seeing it again so that I wouldn’t have spoilers. This year it’s a similar situation with Captain Marvel and the second part of the Avenger’s movie.
So we all went to see it last Friday and it was really good. I will be honest and say I knew almost nothing of the character aside from it being a woman. But the story presented was quite good and I love the way there were such strong female characters. She’s almost too good, far stronger than any of the other superhero characters. I guess that goes some way to offsetting the limited number of female superheros out there. There are actually three women in the film that are significant to the story and all of them are strong women. Impressive!

On to the film
I finished reading To Kill a Mockingbird recently and wanted to see the film again so I could compare. By chance, one of the cable movie channels was showing it tonight so I had to watch. I would prefer to see the dvd because the version show on tv wasn’t a widescreen version and I’d really like to see that. I still loved the movie but I couldn’t help noting the bits of the book that had been left out and the adaptation of the story that was done. It still works, but having the book freshly in my mind made the omissions and changes obvious right now. I had a variety of distractions during much of the first half of the film but it had my full attention for the rest of it. I definitely would like to have a copy of both the book and the film.

Wet days
Today was yet another very wet day in our neck of the woods. It started in the latter part of the morning and rained steadily all afternoon. The weekly newspaper deliveries have been delayed until tomorrow in homes of a break. I believe we will have an early and rough allergy season ahead of us in the spring.
I went on a search to find a dvd of To Kill a Mockingbird but have had little success. It seems it will be necessary to purchase this one online. I will note that I found a two-disc set that seemed like a brilliant deal until I realised the dvd was in 4:3 rather than widescreen. The slightly older release has fewer features but I can live without them if it means I get the widescreen version instead.

Stardust
We watched the Stardust dvd tonight, after the Lego lover and I finished our together time. I read the book a couple years ago and had looked forward to seeing the film. Part of me was a bit anxious to see the film for fear of being disappointed, but I totally enjoyed the movie. I found the casting worked really well and the movie seems to have kept the essence of the book quite nicely. I had heard that Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfeiffer both had memorable performances and neither was disappointing. The performance and presentation were very well done.
