Mary Poppins
Last November my close friend, K, and I found out the stage show Mary Poppins was coming to Perth and we were both quite excited as we’d heard it was playing over in the eastern states before and wondered if we’d be lucky enough to have it travel west. I’d ordered the tickets a few days after they’d gone on sale and managed to get some pretty decent seats, a vast improvement over the previous show we’d seen earlier last year. The date was set for May 10th at 8pm. It was just a matter of waiting for the performance.
Unfortunately my friend K wasn’t there with me to enjoy the show a couple days ago. For more than a year and a half, she’d been undergoing treatment for cancer that had spread to her liver. In February she stopped the treatment and started palliative care. Last month she was taken to hospice and her condition deteriorated rapidly in a matter of days, such that she wasn’t expected to live more than a few days. She hung on for more than two weeks but finally had her release from the pain and suffering on May 3rd. It was expected but still such a shock and will continue to be for a while.
K had been so looking forward to Mary Poppins. Her memory had gotten really bad and she’d call up quite regularly to check she hadn’t missed it and I’d reassure her. When I finally had the news of her death, one of the first things I thought was she really was going to miss the show. It wasn’t until that point I could or would do anything about her ticket…although it would have become necessary to take some action before the night. I thought about not going but I knew K would want me to be there. I was fortunate to have another friend able to go at short notice and understanding the situation completely.
Last Thursday I went to see Mary Poppins and it was a really lovely show.. My friend K would have loved it and we’d have marveled over the set designs and changes. And the songs and the dancing. A very entertaining show it certainly was. I did enjoy seeing it with another friend but it wasn’t an easy night and I so missed my friend and her company. And I’ll continue to miss her company at many shows in the future but her memory will always be with me.

Hmmm
Just noticed it’s exactly one month since my last post. It’s not like nothing has been happening in my world either. Haven’t taken time to take note of things, I guess.
So in the last month:
- I did eventually get my mammogram results back several days after they were supposed to arrive. By that time I had contacted the Breast Screen office and learned my results were normal and there were delays with posting letters.
- Christmas turned out to be pretty good this year with a nice family gathering for lunch that drifted into early evening. The boys were happy with their gifts and the nieces and nephew were pleased with theirs. It’s been quite a long time but I finally made a couple batches of chickpea and vegetable patties again this time. I hadn’t bothered in a while as it takes a lot time and effort to make them but I’m glad I put in the effort again.
- Our air conditioner stopped cooling on December 29th, just before a long holiday weekend. Supposedly it required replacement of an expensive electronic part which couldn’t be obtained until the following week. We were fortunate to have the use of the fan during this time so that it was more comfortable to sleep at night. The morning after the new part was installed, we found the air conditioner was not operating at all, not even the fan. That expensive electronic part was sent back to be tested and eventually found to be working fine. Another part was found to be non-functioning and was finally replaced this week. We must also add the additional cost of two more fans to keep family members a bit more comfortable during this time. Fortunately last weekend was quite chilly and we didn’t need to run the fans at night.
- My driver’s license was up for renewal this week and I was indecisive as to whether to bother about getting a photo done or not. (It was optional this time around.) I eventually chose not to do the photo and to renew online as I don’t usually require photo id all that often and do have my passports should I require one.
- I made an appointment to give blood for the first time in over twenty years. I gave several times during my college years and once or twice afterwards. But since I’ve been in Australia, I haven’t gotten around to doing it. The big stumbling block is definitely the fact I have to make an appointment here instead of just turning up like I did back home. My appointment is set for Monday morning.
- I think I’ve had two appointments with my physiotherapist this past month. Despite the exercises, my knee hasn’t improved all that much. I am being referred back to my doctor to see about further medical assessments, which I assume means some sort of imaging. Meanwhile, I get to do 15 rep sets of two different exercises twice daily now. The newest one is a squatting one, which I find quite unpleasant most of the time.
- I discovered the delights of bubble tea last month and have been buying it two or three times a week for the past several weeks. I will have to start reducing this habit, though, as it’s not terribly compatible with my blood glucose levels…although it doesn’t seem to affect it as much as some other foods.
I’m sure there’s more I could add to the list but will leave it at that. I do have some other posts I want to write soon about Lego Lover becoming a teenager last month and also about life with the puppies.

Time speeding past
I just realized it’s now been a couple weeks since I last posted and it hardly seems like that at all. Must be the rush of the season this year.
As of this weekend I became the owner of an iPhone on a postpaid plan. Turns out it is more cost effective to go this route than to buy it outright and pay for phone recharges. Plus I get a data allowance each month. Anyway, it’s been interesting to learn my way through the use of the phone. Except I have made a complete phone call as yet. Just checked it would ring through when I dialled. So far I have mostly used the camera with a couple of apps that I found. I’m having the most fun with the hipstamatic app, which uses filter to give photos a retro look. There are different “lenses” and “film” to try out on the app and you can shake the device to get random options with some interesting results. One benefit of this phone is it’s unlikely I would find myself with a dead battery as I tended to keep the iPod touch charged pretty easily. This does, however, go through the battery much faster and I will have to make sure I charge it daily. I suspect there is still a lot to learn about the features on this, since it’s markedly different from the ancient iPod touch.
I had a freaky alert go off on my phone and iPad at midnight yesterday. It tried to persuade me that my recently deceased grandma had a birthday the next day. That would have been fine except her birthday was at the end of October. And my calendar has that listed twice (Outlook reinstall/sync issue). And there was definitely no alert about her birthday then. Or anyone else’s birthday for that matter. I have looked through all my calendars on the computer and can find no evidence elsewhere of this “event”. I’m sure I didn’t get an alert for this last year either. Anyway, I will just think of this as that freaky birthday alert and it will most likely remain a mystery.
I’m still awaiting my mammogram results from almost two weeks ago. I’m supposed to have them by tomorrow so hopefully I will find them in the mailbox next time the mail arrives. I must admit to being a tad bit anxious at lack of news but my more rational side believes I would have been contacted by phone by now had there been any issues. Hopefully will be able to put my mind at ease when the mail next arrives.
I’m sure I had something else to say but honestly can’t recall. Must mean it’s too late to be up writing and I should get to sleep soon.

A couple bits and pieces
I’m still feeling a bit weird about my grandmother’s death but I imagine that is to be expected. In some ways it doesn’t feel very real to me yet. And that kind of makes it difficult to grieve in whatever way. It will probably take some time before it really sinks in since I’m so far removed from family.
I went looking online for the local obituary and was dismayed to find the only one filled with all sorts of misspellings and other errors. To my knowledge this isn’t a full news service website as most obituaries will appear in a more regional paper. But I wasn’t able to find one in the usual place so I wonder if one appeared there or not. I’m sure my mother will get a copy of it if one was printed. Unfortunately the funeral home seems to be using the error-ridden one in its online guest book.
I’m off for my annual mammogram tomorrow, which should be loads of fun. Actually, I’ve only had a pain while going through it once and that was over pretty quickly. The worst part is always the wait to receive the results, which usually come through the mail. I suspect I’d be contacted by phone should there be need for follow-up.

Magpies
Ever since I was swooped by magpies on various occasions a few years ago, I would become anxious when around them. But I thought I might be getting a bit better in the last year or so. I was proved wrong this evening while taking Fluttershy for her walk. We had stopped for a little while near a playground  and there were quite a few magpies on the ground when we arrived. I wasn’t too fussed at first but then started thinking that I’d been swooped late in the season on more than one occasion. So I started trying to work out a pathway to avoid the birds. Ultimately, they all flew off so the problem was solved. Funnily enough, I don’t get too worked up about spiders or snakes or some of the ordinary fear-provoking creatures. But magpies are obviously still an issue for me.

Walking the puppies
Our puppies are now about six and a half months old but we haven’t managed to get into a regular walking routine with them as of yet. I’m not too worried about their exercise just yet because they spend heaps of time in active play inside and out of the house. But I do think there is some sort of boredom factor when they don’t get out of the house so I am working on increasing the number of walks.
To backtrack, we were pretty gung ho about starting walks back when they were first old enough to be taken out. But little girl didn’t like the harness and balked at going anywhere. The couple of times I took her out, I almost had to drag her at times. Little boy liked going out for walks but then he got put off by some really windy days that must have ruffled his fur a bit too much. We attempted to take them to the dog beach but we had to make a quick escape when little boy started barking his head off at every other person and dog. I guess they weren’t quite ready for such an overwhelming experience. We also had several extended periods of rainy days so it’s not hard to see how a little procrastination turned into a lot.
Due to the recurrent knee problems I’m not managing to get out as often as I’d like as it gets too sore to walk very far once I’ve taken both out. I’ve been advised to keep walks to 20-30 minutes so my current plan is to take one out one day and the other out the next. When they are better trained and more well-behaved I will make attempts to take them together although that does reduce the potential exercise I might get once my knee is better.
The good news is that little girl is now mostly enjoying her walks although she still runs and hides when I pull out the harness. Once she is outside, she seems mostly happy and is getting much more at ease while we are out. She does bark occasionally but is not so bad as little boy, who barks at just about everything. That said, little boy is getting a bit better with continued exposure to the outside world. What has been interesting to note is the number of dogs we hear barking at everything as we pass by the different houses. While I don’t think it’s a good thing to hear this, it does make me feel a bit better that our pups aren’t the only ones with this problem. And since they are still young, I’m hoping they will get better with maturity and training.
Little boy really likes going for a walk but he has begun to copy his sister’s behavior when it’s time to go out by hiding. Otherwise, walking him goes quite well aside from the occasional barking. One habit that has started with him is the need to relieve his bowels within minutes of starting the walk. And he often needs to go twice while out so I’ve started taking extra supplies to clean up the messes. The sister never goes while out but she does sometimes stop to relieve her bladder.
Little boy also has the unfortunate ability to collect half the outdoors in his long fur. At the moment the worst problem is the little dried burs from the clover getting stuck in his fur and requiring considerable time to remove. What often happens is we get home and little boy starts trying to get them out of his paws but then gets them stuck in the fur around his mouth. Little girl’s fur hardly collects anything as it’s is short and seems to repel almost everything except water. Even with water, she seems to dry quite quickly though.
Tonight I ended up just taking the little girl out and the brother apparently was quite distressed when we’d gone. Funnily enough he’d also run off when a walk was suggested but changed his tune once he realised what he was missing. It was too dark by the time we returned so there was no chance to take him out even if I were up to more exercise. Tomorrow I will take him earlier in the day as I have to be out in the early evening. It will be interesting to see if the sister has any reaction to missing out.
Next puppy topic is likely to be night time with puppies.

Whale watching cruise
On Saturday, I went with the Scientist and my friend, K, to do a whale watching cruise. We got to Fremantle early so went to the E-Shed Markets, across from the ferry terminal. My friend got a drink and a cake so we sat around for a little while before finding our way across the parking lot. Once our vouchers were processed we waited around outside to board the boat. Oddly, the boat we were travelling on was from a different company than we purchased our tickets. A few minutes before departure we were allowed to board and found our way downstairs to find a seat. Even docked, the boat was rocking a fair bit. Once the tour started, the boat was rocking and rolling while travelling at full speed across some choppy water.
After travelling for 20 minutes or so, the boat slowed a bit as it entered the path of the whales. We continued to cruise along for a while longer before some whales were spotted. Soon we had stopped and all moved outside to the upper deck to view the whales. It wasn’t a full boat but the people there were almost all crowded at the front and seeing much was difficult. On top of that, the boat was rolling around quite a bit which made it difficult to do much more than hold on. There was another boat nearby that seemed to be rocking and rolling even more than ours was.
I did see some whales but wasn’t able to take any photos from where I was. I eventually moved to the back of the boat where there was space to hold on to the side and watch. The view wasn’t ideal but it was possible to see some activity and I did get a few photos with slight evidence of the whales’ appearance in them. I think we may have been lucky to see anything with the water being so rough that day.
Eventually the staff asked everyone to return to the seating area so the boat could return to the harbor and we went downstairs again. I had been feeling seasick pretty much from the moment I stepped on the boat, despite having taken Stemzine for motion problems before we started out. I can just hope the medication reduced the effects for me. I think I was faring better than some of the other passengers and I was thankful I hadn’t eaten or drunk much before the cruise. Fortunately I recovered considerably once on solid ground again.
We were quite hungry by this point so had an early dinner and finished off with a visit to San Churro’s Chocolateria for dessert. I had a hot chocolate with chilli in it along with a couple churros and chocolate. All very yummy and satisfying. Fremantle wasn’t particularly crowded, which was surprising since it was the first day of the Fremantle Festival that runs for the next couple weeks, I think.
We probably wouldn’t do this particular cruise again as it’s pretty expensive usually and there’s always a chance you won’t see anything. We might do as well to do a trip to Rottnest Island and take a chance on seeing whales along the way.

Life with puppies
There have been many times I’ve wanted to write about our puppies and how our lives have been turned upside down. And I will write about that one of these days but I’m too tired to think clearly tonight. I will say that two puppies, a cat, and a Lego Lover makes for quite a zoo. Or crazy house, depending on how you look at it…

Currently reading…
I started reading Gone with the Wind weeks ago and I’m still working on it. Reading frequency varies each day but I usually read at least one or two chapters on my iPad before going to sleep each night. I’ve found it to be a really good novel and is far more interesting than I ever expected it to be. It has brought the Confederate view of the war and the reconstruction to life in a way that never happened with lessons at school. It was always very dry facts back then. I think I’m nearing the end and hopefully will be finished later in the week when I will post more specific comments about the novel.

The beginning of the end
When your child is born, he or she is really your child for ever. But the childhood of your child doesn’t last forever. And that is where we are with Game Fanatic. He is seventeen years old today and will be an adult a year from now. At least by the standards of our society. Kind of weird to think about. And also kind of cool.
Happy birthday to my Game Fanatic! Enjoy this last year of childhood.
