A Lego Lover's Tenth Birthday
The birthday boy had what he called an awesome birthday. He didn’t wake up first like he intended but he had a really great day. I had to go out to buy balloons and a couple other bits and pieces early on so that I wasn’t at home when he woke up. I’d already wished him a happy birthday when he was still struggling to sleep in the wee hours of the morning so he was mostly anxious of my return so that he could open his gifts. His big gift from us was a Lego City Harbor set, one of the most coveted on his list. He also got copies of both season one and four of Spongebob Squarepants from my parents. While Lego Lover started building, I baked his cake. Since I have the strongest lungs, I then had the privilege of blowing up the twenty-five balloons. Game Fanatic, who is balloon-phobic stayed mostly out of the way during this process. Lego Lover had intentions of keeping them all in one area of the house but they ended up drifting around after awhile.
Family came over around lunch-time so the Lego construction was suspended and the parts moved to the bedroom to avoid any unexpected difficulties. Aside from the cake, we planned to have pizza for everyone except my niece, who has dairy and soy allergies. It seems that even if we had avoided the dairy in the pizzas, everything has soy in it so we were going to get her a small meal from the chicken shop. We changed this to include the other niece and nephew too, which worked out well because they apparently don’t like pizza! I’m trying to recall now when Lego Lover opened his other presents and I am not quite sure now. The important thing to know is he got a huge Bionicle set and a gift card to spend. This set was one he really didn’t want because he said it was too big. When he opened it, you’d never have noticed because he thought it was pretty “awesome!”
A little while later we did the cake, which was an odd experience because Lego Lover, like his brother, hates having the birthday song sung to him. It was a bit awkward for a moment. Lighting the candles was its own fiasco because the wicks had so much wax that they melted everywhere before they were all lit. Next time he will get the really cheap ones again! After all the candles had melted away, it still took about three blows to get them all out. The cake was eaten and Lego Lover was wondering when everyone would leave so he could have the house back to himself so he could get back to building! Eventually everyone did leave and all was quiet for a while.
We had a visit from the Scientist’s boss later on which was intended to just drop off a Christmas gift but ran a bit longer. I had a nice chat while the Scientist was helping with the building. We got to talking about the new ice skating rink being built practically around the corner from us, which will be more convenient for his children who must travel to a far off location for an ice rink. The boss was telling how they buy all their skates from Canada and it costs less than half the price locally even when factoring in shipping charges. Eventually he left and we were free from visitors the rest of the day.
Lego Lover really handled the day and the visitors quite well. He did get a bit stressed a couple of times but was able to just move to a quieter space for a while. He eventually came back to the crowd, though, and still enjoyed his day. We were really pleased it all came off so well.
The remaining part of the day was very casual with lots of Lego and Bionicle building, some dvd watching and at the end of the day, a nice chat along with some reading of a library book I’d gotten for Lego Lover several weeks ago. He was quite satisfied with his tenth birthday and has some wonderful memories of his day.
