Biting my tongue

I mean this in the most literal sense. Tonight I was eating a salad with some raw carrots in it and I bit my tongue. That itself is not so unusual as I do this all the time and regularly have a bump on the tongue prone to being bitten repeatedly. In this case, I bit my tongue, apparently rather hard, and I had the most terrible pain I’ve ever had when doing so. This time I could feel pain all the way into my ear and the initial pain lasted far longer than usual. This bite was near the back of my tongue along the very edge. I’m guessing I must have hit a nerve in very big way. Even now, hours later, there’s a decent bump that’s come out and any friction of food or drink seems to bring on the ear pain although not anywhere nearly as bad as the initial pain. I’ve never had this happen before so I wonder how common it is.
