Psycho cat

My parents divorced a couple years ago and my mom has been living in an apartment alone the last couple of years. Last year she decided she would like a companion and adopted a kitten from a litter. Her kitten of choice was the one that didn’t claw her and seemed most loving.

On the second day she had this kitten, he bit her, apparently quite hard, because it was enough to cause her to cry. Over the last year, the cat has bitten her so many times she has scars on her leg. She knew she needed to get rid of this cat but she had grown too attached.

Last week, the cat bit her so hard on the arm she had to drive herself over forty minutes to the emergency room. The wound was deep enough that the surgeon said it couldn’t be stitched for fear of infection and she was given a couple very strong antibiotics to take for two weeks. When she got home she was so worried about another attack, she called animal control to come take the cat away. She said she hadn’t realised how tense she had been around the cat all the time until he was gone. But while it’s a relief to her not to worry about any further attacks, she still misses her companion.

Mom has no current plan to try to adopt another cat because she just doesn’t want to go through that process again. Aside from the obvious benefits she will also be able to stop taking the anti-histamines daily for her cat allergies. It’s too bad she is not in the position to adopt a dog because I am sure that would suit her far better in so many ways.

This put into perspective our frustration with our own cat. Yesterday I discovered our cat had left a present under my desk. I almost put my slippered foot into it but fortunately detected an odor and discovered it before a misstep took place. She doesn’t do this all that often so I think I’d prefer to deal with this sort of problem every once in a while instead of a psychotic cat that bites all the time.

I knew someone who had a cat like that years ago – a friend of mine had to feed it while its owner was away and got a huge bruise from where the cat attacked her.

It was kind of funny in an ironic sort of way that I saw the Gilmore Girls episode today where Kirk takes on the cat he named Kirk and the not-so-pleasant aftermath for Kirk, the human. I don’t hear about cats being nasty to their owners without good reason…this was meant to be funny, of course, but it was a bit more sobering to see this again, after my mom’s experience.
