Oldies

We have two small cd towers filled with albums that we almost never hear. I think it’s kind of an out-of-sight, out-of-mind thing. I mean, they are quite visible to me on a daily basis but I never seem to look there to augment my usual musical soundtrack, which consists mostly of Finn-related recordings and local (to Australia) music. I decided to venture into my musical past recently and pulled out a couple Beatles albums that I’ve not listened to in a very long time. I often list the Beatles as one of my favorites artists but then I never listen to their music now. Weird…

So last week, I was driving home late in the evening and feeling really stressed, anxious and tired at the time. But listening to the radio turned out to be a good distraction for me because the show was playing some great old songs that I remember from my childhood and teen aged years. The last song I heard played was Question, by the Moody Blues. I enjoyed it so much that the next day I went to seek out my one Moody Blues cd, a compilation of some of their “greatest hits”. I have their Long Distance Voyager album on lp somewhere but we don’t have a decent turntable so it’s not likely to be played any time soon. I didn’t find the album immediately but did run across some albums that I haven’t even looked at in years.

So I’ve been listening to some “old” music. I’m listening to Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. I may even drag out our one Madonna cd  before long because I think it’s been fifteen years since I’ve heard it. I’m pretty sure I’ve got a couple other albums that are even more forgotten but can’t even recall the artist now…

I did eventually find the missing Moody Blues disc, sitting on the shelf next to Fleetwood Mac. Our discs are ordered alphabetically by artist, so I’ve no idea how it came to be there unless it occurred accidently while cleaning one day. Anyway, I loved hearing the old music and I am even tempted to buy more music now.

I have the Long Distance Voyager album on LP too! I miss listening to it. I still do listen to the Beatles a lot, at least the newest LOVE album, and certain Paul Simon albums. But I hardly get into the old Police stuff, tho I have a box set. And even worse, some of my music exists only on cassette tape now, and it only gets played in the car on long trips.

I’ve recently started listening to an “oldies” station which mostly includes music from the 60s and 70s, and a pub that we often go to after dancing often pipes in 80s hits. I find it amusing to hear songs from my distant past, and occasionally, I tell myself I should track down certain songs, but I rarely do. I still have some CDs from the 90s, but I hardly listen to them any more. Tom Petty and Peter Gabriel and other new wave-rock n roll. Weird. It’s almost as if they have an emotional resonance, and I have to be in a certain mood to take them on.

Sometimes I will feel in a mood to shake things up, and I’ll go digging through my CDs to play all kinds of wild things I haven’t heard in a while. Ooh, look, Madonna, Duran Duran, Bryan Ferry, and 10,000 Maniacs! The Fixx?? (One Thing Leads to Another, Saved By Zero.) I forgot I even had that CD.

I had the Fixx album too. I think I might have gotten rid of it when we came to Australia. I used to have all the Duran Duran albums but I think I think they were sold before we came here too. The scientist got me a live dvd of them for my birthday a year or two ago, which was quite brave considering he has never cared for them at all. I don’t watch it a lot but it’s fun to relive the early days (even though they are middle aged in the dvd, lol). The only oldies station here is on the am dial so I don’t listen to that much. I think the music played on them must be so different to what they used to play back in the 80s though. :) There are a couple fm stations that play a variety or “mix” of music from the 60s to current music and both play a lot of 80s music. They played the Fixx not too long ago and it took me by surprise because I rarely hear that on the radio.
